Who's your favorite group of enemies/assassins? SPOILERS
Throughout the game you run unto various groups of cutthroats and assassins and other adventurers with an attitude and considerable loot. Which group is your favorite and why? I'm not talking about the final battle, but more speaking of the groups that attack you in the wilderness or in Baldur's Gate. Some examples would be the miscreants south of Gullykin and the group of Amnish nobles hunting south of Nashkel. I like the second group, because you don't have to fight, but if you hate pompous jerks, it's a lot of fun mowing them down. A really tough battle early on.
Maulers of Undermountain or whatever they're called in the Helm and Cloak Inn
I'm pretty sure there has been a thread like this before
Yeah, but I suck at searches and I can never find the previous stuff. I know there was a favorite enemy one, but I was talking strictly groups or single assassins out to get you in various things. Not just favorite chapters or areas or whatnot.

Curry is probably referring to this old thread.
Let's itemize some of the battles. I don't know if I can choose one as "the best", since all of them have their merits. I haven't included many of the standard "dungeon quest" encounters or run-of-the-mill bandits:
The first wolf you meet outside of Candlekeep (seriously)
Shank and Carbos (you have to admit they're funny)
Tarnesh (a real wake-up call at the Friendly Arm Inn and the scourge of a 1st level party--even tougher than the first wolf you meet)
Karlat (dwarven Fighter at the Red Sheaf Inn in Beregost)
The Flaming Fist mercenary who mistakes you for a bandit (south of Beregost)
Neira (Nashkel Inn--that Hold spell can be deadly)
Nimbus (Nashkel--I didn't expect him at all the first time I met him when my party was limping back from the Nashkel Mines)
Vitiare (the magnificent Thief who robs you in the gambling tent at the Nashkel Carnival--good luck trying to catch him)
The "Amazons" outside the Nashkel Mines (Zeela, Maneira, Lamalha, and Telka--very tough)
The assassins at Gullykin (Drakar, Molkar, Halacan, and Morvin--not especially tough, but nice equipment and an attitude that's so annoying, it's entertaining)
The bounty hunters sent by Rieltar to meet you at the Cloakwood Mines (Drasus, Genthore, Rezdan, and Kysus)
The five Ogre Mages in the southern sector of Baldur's Gate
Larze the Ogre at the Blushing Mermaid (dumb but very strong!)
Slythe and Krystin (Undercellar)
The party hired by the Iron Throne to kill Sarevok in the Undercity who will also attack you (Ahvin, Gorf, Carston, Shaldrissa, Wudei, and Haseo)
The adventurers you meet in the wildnerness area with Korax the Ghoul and all of the basilisks (Kirian, Peter, Lindin, and Baerin)
The snobbish Amnish adventurers south of Nashkel (Sendai, Delgod, and Alexander)
Vax and Zal (who really is the fastest dart thrower in the west)
Shoal the Nereid and Ogre-Droth (on the coast south of Candlekeep--definitely a reload the first time you meet them)
The Maulers of Undermountain (Gretek, Wilf, Arlin, Caturak, Pargus and Nader) at the Helm and Cloak Inn in Baldur's Gate
Honorable Mention: the xvarts who attack Hulrik's cow, Arabelle

VonDondu's List: many fond memories !
Seriously and absolutely: that first wolf *was* great. It really gave the feeling of isolation while traversing the dangerous wilderness of the Sword Coast.
Tarnesh was also great. Reading the bounty notice he was carrying, with *your* name on it... it really hit home the mystery and danger you were in.
I'd like to also submit The Great Gazib & The Amazing Oopah, the Exploding Ogre. It scares me how funny I found those guys...

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

Thanks for expanding on my topic VonDondu. Much appreciated. I forgot about those Xvarts! I've only managed to save the cow a few times, they are annoying.

There are quite a few memorable one's, but the most memorable one to me would be the Xvart camp. I remember roaming around and exploring that unknown territory one day and just happened to walk right into their camp. It turned into a massacre. The only problem I had was with Ursula the Cave Bear. But after the fight, I have to admit something. I felt kinda' bad cause I had just walked into their home and slaughtered all of them. They never gave me a chance though, they just attacked, so I defended myself and wiped them all out.
Mitch:You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning... Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?Mitch: No... Chris Knight:Why am I the only one who has that dream?
