You out of your mind? Monks are TOO friggin' strong. By far the most overpowered class.
It's interesting, but there seems to be a bias in this direction in EVERY game with a monk-type character. Anyone else notice this? Look at Diablo 2, or FFT, or Darkness Falls: Crusade if anyone's heard of that. (I had a much longer list of games with overpowered monks in them at one time, but I can only think of those three and this one offhand.) Someone else think of a game with a monk class and see if they're overpowered there too.
It's interesting why this happens, and I think I've come up with a theory. Game designers have to balance out a universal lack of weapons and a general lack of armor against other characters that can use both, and that's hard to do precisely. No one is sure how to make punches equal to weapons, since weapons change but the fists don't. So they tend to err on the side of making the unarmed/armored classes TOO strong rather than too weak.
Either that, or everyone watches too much DBZ.

Hmm... I've played monk only once. I didn't like him but I played with him only 5 min to test him. The smoke mephit (north from your cell) almost killed me! I didn't have a weapon or armour, but I'm not supposed to right? I'm not saying that monks su!k, since I really havn't played with one but what did I do wrong? Left to 3 HP by a mephit?
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

I am trying to solo a monk right now and hes not doing very well. He is level 10 and the only way he can kill anything is by using thief style tactics by hiding then hitting something and running away and hiding again. I sure hope you guys are right about monks getting powerful at high levels because at level 10 they suck.

I don't know what you people are talking about! monks are great, I played with a monk, he layed the smack down on everyone in his path, even at low level, all those memphits got whooped by my monk. Fanatic, why would you play as kensai/mage the first time you went through the game? try a class that was actually designed by game to be passed with, like a MONK!

I played monk with my first game, and I have yet to see another PC with that much power. It's true that he's a bit weak at first, but around 12 or 13, he starts to get seriously dangerous. By the time I got to the underdark, he had over 50% magic resist, plenty of HPs and could take 4 attacks at d20 each. And if he picks up the Gauntlets of crushing and cloak of mirrors in the sharky city...well, hell, he's just a god at that point. I took him back to Athkatla and aced Kangaxx on the first try.
Yeah I am 13 now also and he just wasted a Beholder and 2 gaths all by himself without any reflection items. I was impressed.
