The first time you played Morrowind

Post by SupaCat »

When I bought the morrowind Ubisoft Exclusive for €15 I didnt know what to expect. I didnt know the game, but i knew it was a rpg so I bought it. After the instal it was in a file where i didnt want it. So i tought:"Man this game will be crapy". How wrong I was! Wans playing and seeing the intro I had more hope. A grim face from a race that i didnt know asked me my name. I hearded the sea against the boat. When outside I was stunned by the water. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the races came and I choose the now know face: the dark elf. I choose the class battlemage becous I liked mages. The spellsystem was confusing first but after awile i knew it. I still learned so much after that. I didnt knew after the first time killing dagoth ur how i could make potions. I didnt know how to be a vampire, etc

The first time I played, I was stunned. Multiple times, in fact. The Seyda Neen eye opening was one we all had, but I also had a stunning entry into Vivec when I accidentally casted a spell of Almsivi Intervention. I was shocked by its scale. I haven't played many games before Morrowind and in fact had not played any first person games, but even after looking at most modern games, Morrowind is still grander than them all, and more beautiful than most.

I remember being overwhelmed by the vastness of of the land, the freedom, the enormous amount of quests and the inefficiency of the journal (this was pre-tribunal) so I kept forgeting which quests I was doing for who.

I first played on a friends X-Box, and was pretty clueless. I went to balmora, at night, and was astounded by the atmosphere. Then I killed nine-toes and stoled his crosssbow :D ;)

(I've grown up now :p )
Mag: Don't remember much at all of last night do you?
Me: put simply.... No :D
Mag: From what I put together of your late night drunken ramblings? Vodka, 3 girls, and then we played tic-tac-toe and slapped each other around.

The first time for me, well it was confusing as heck. Now, I have re-installed it and am starting a new character, WITH, I might add, a brand new video card.

The game itself is possibly one of the best games I've ever seen. Now with the new video card, Nvidia G-force 4 (That's all I could afford, but it went from 2 to 4) and the graphics are INSANE.

Never again will I experience something that gave off such a strong impression at first. Never again will a game amount to this masterpiece and its next game, Oblivion. I await the release of the new game and hope it comes as close to the last game.

Bethseda did a fine job indeed and as a first impression, though I was confused, it was SPECTACULAR.

My first experience was at my friends house, we had a character that we played together, I was blown away by the sheer scale of the game and the environments. We were amazed when we leveled up to level 3, we were huge noobs but its was great all the same.
Finally running a decent computer!

I knew all about it.. saw pictures, detailes, i knew how huge the landmass would be.. i know there were a lot of characters, a lot of freedom..
Heck.. when i saw the game i couldn't belive it was real. For me it was perfect in every way (even if i couldn't see the enemy's health until the tribunal, even with the journal :p ). Love the game every time i play it and it never seems out-of-date. Grand game!

completely blown away, first time. game sets standards for graphics, interface, score, liberty, and scope. still have fond memories of running around seyda neen, just looking up at the sky, being completely lost and loving it, marvelling at the stars and the sunset. bloody amazing.

I was awed... I think what struck me the most amongst my initial impressions, was the first time I 'experienced' a thunderstorm. I practically vaulted from my desk chair at the sharp crack of thunder coming from my speakers :D

Then, about 6 weeks ago I updated my video card, and I almost experienced all over again that sense of being blown away, especially by the water, the sunsets and the night skies.

I still do.

On the other hand, lag is always an issue. My frame rate drops to 10-15 fps in Pelagiad, Ebonheart, and Sadrith Mora, among other places, and I have a 2.4GHz P4, 1GB RAM, and a 9800SE, which is more powerful than anything available at the time of Morrowind's release. I've heard that this happens even to dual-opteron computers with a Geforce 6800 graphics card.

That's actually quite reassuring to hear. My machine is fairly old, P3, 1 Gz. Though I've upped the ram to 384 (I think) and installed a second hard drive. It had a 32 bit graphics card in it, so Morrowind crawled, it was really painful. Then I installed just a basic card upgrade (MSI GeForce FX5200, 64 bit). The difference is absolutely extroardinary! The visuals are stunning, and speed has accelerated dramatically; I can now play at the highest resolutions at full shadows and pixelations without my computer cracking a sweat. I still have some lags, and FPS slowdowns, but they are *much* briefer.
So, it's good to know that having a bigger processor and memory, and faster machine, might not actually make very much difference at this point :D

I'm in agreement with you on that DW. I don't have a real cutting edge machine anymore. GeForce 4 420MX 64 bit; 512 RAM; 1.2 Gz Celeron.
It runs pretty good, even though I do still lag in the same places that Rookierookie mentioned (Ebonheart, Pelagiad, Sadrith Mora even Seyda Neen for whatever reason). A little slow at other times, but nothing too begrudging.

I gotta' say though, my first experience at video game RPG's was BG, BG2 and IWD. So I was really looking forward to good strong dialogue and a deep storyline to envelope me when I first bought this game. The graphics were great, the storm effects were awesome, the wide open world was cool. But aside from all that, you can imagine my dismay coming from the BG dialogue and plummeting into the confusing, unengaging, and sloppy dialogue within Morrowind. I put the game down after only about a week or two out of frustration and a deepening lack of interest. Then later I picked it back up and made an effort at getting used to the dialogue and learning how it worked. Now I really can't put the game down!! It's great! I would really like to see the dialogue improved in Oblivion, but I can now say that I'm sold on Morrowind! ;)

Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?Mitch: No... Nvidia graphics card users: Diaplay Properties > Your vid card > Direct3D Settings > More Direct3D Settings > Render no more than 3 (default) frames(s) ahead

try adjusting this default setting downwards from 3 to 2 or 1 for increased fps - as always, hardware dependent, so ymmv

ATI users, not sure where such an adjustment would be made

Where do you go to adjust your Display Properties (I know the answer to this question is gonna make me go   :o , but I can't figure it out myself. Our daughter kept us awake from 0.00 til 4.30.)?

Right click on your desktop and go to properties

Well, I happen to be on ATI, and there is AFAIK no option for pre-rendering for the Catalyst controls. In any case, I would have thought that reducing pre-rendered frames actually DECREASES performance.

I'll just say that when a 3-4 year old game scores just as much frames as a one-year old game (Thief: Deadly Shadows) on what is approximately the same settings, the graphics engine is either extremely impressive or extremely inefficient. I'd say that it's a balance of the two :)

My brother had bought the game and he never got into it(His Loss). I created a Dark Elf Thief. Was alot of fun to play. After that I got absorbed into the game. I ended up having to creat another character when my brother reformatted the computer.
