Can't install patch 1.02 - error message!
Hey all!
Since everyone is recommending that i should install the patches i will.. but then there's this major problem..cant install it!
I have downloaded the 1.02 patch but when i run the exe it says "Running Fallout 2 requires a CD".. Yup.. i know..thats why i already have put the cd in my drive! but it keeps on displaying that error... what to do?

I didn't even know updating requires the CD... Anyway, are you sure, you're installing the right patch? There're seperated UK and US patches for example so check which is the right one. Do you have any mods/earlier patches installed? If everything else fails, re-install the whole game.
I hope you don't have a saved game you're about to continue. You can't play version 1.0 games with 1.02. Updating is absolutely necessary though, so don't hesitate to restart the game if you have already started.

Hmm that's strange. You could check if there's some config files at the fallout2 root, which determines the cd-drive (can't remember is there, currently at the work). There might be a slightly possibility that your cd is damaged, although that sounds odd if your installation was successful. Maybe you could try a nocd-crack.. I think it's acceptable in a situation like this.
I don't think the patch itself can be corrupted (in that case it wouldn't even start), but you can re-download it too.
Too much guessing

Just to be sure. Will it ask the CD after patching, while you're trying to start the game or when you're trying to patch the game? If it's the first one the nocd-crack helps for sure.

It just extracts that file/those files (it's like ages I installed my fallout and updated it). The game works without the patch normally?

I'll check the details in an hour, after I get off from work, until someone else got answers before that. Patching "program" was simple self-extractor as far as I remember, which extracted file/files to the fallout2 -directory (could ask the right directory). After that you should just start the game normally.
If the game requires the CD after patching, but not before it, there's definetely something wrong with the patch. If it doesn't work from the beginning something else is wrong...

So the right patch is f2patch-uk.exe (2,78MB).
Launch the exe and Self-Extractor opens. Write the fallout2 path in the Unzip folder -field and click Unzip button. The extractor unzips three files (Fallout2.exe, PATCH000.DAT and README.TXT) in the game path. Now just run the game.
If it still asks the CD re-install the game (uninstall&delete old files first) and check will it launch without the patch.

Well, I'm not sure this is what youre after, you could reinstall your game. I haven't played fallout2 with the cd in ages. At the setup it gives you 3 to four options how to install Fallout. I always choose humongus, which installs everything to the harddrive, so you can play without the cd in the drive. It might work.

I got the biggest installation and at least after patching the game won't start without the CD. There's a cdlock system, which checks wether the CD is in or not. I'm using the nocd-crack though, like in many other games. I'll keep original rather safe in their boxes than laying around.
