Great Cleave
Great Cleave
Does Great Cleave allow me a free attack against every opponent in range after I kill somebody, or must I kill each opponent in turn to get my free hits? If it's the latter, then Great Cleave is only useful when you're fighting a horde of goblins.

If you kill an attacker you get a free attack on another enemy in range.
With cleave you get only one extra attack,
with great cleave you get unlimited - but only if you kill another enemy with the extra attack (and only with the extra attack)!
This way great cleave is quite useless and occurs more or less never!

Yeah, I've never used it because I always thought it was weak, but...
After reading how Ravager said it's good against badly injured enemies, how would the following strategy work:
Get a mage/sorcerror to cast 1/2 area affect spells, and then when everyone is badly injured, use great cleave.
As I say, I've never tried it, but has anyone ever done that with success?

In memorian: Fiona; Ravager; Lestat; Phreddie; and all of those from the 1500 incident. Lest we forget.

that works, but at the same time why not just cast another fireball and be done w/ it?
the root of the problem:if you are sending in the cleaver to conserve mage power great, otoh if you are spending mage power just to set the cleaver up... imho the above strategy sounds like the latter, deliberately trying to force feed kills to one or two "impact" melee types. the strategy will work but it will require more effort.
consider - mages blast away at pack of enemies, dust settles, pack of enemies is now baddly wounded / near death. they still pack a punch and can beat up on your cleavers as you send them in for clean up. cleavers take some damage requiring use of your cleric's magic.
you could of just finished the group w/ another round of blasting, or you could of used your clerics w/ some flamestrike or similar to finish off the pack of bad guys.
as others have pointed out, great cleave should be pretty low on the list of feats to get, but once you start running out of feats to take, go for it, it can't hurt.

Yeah, I didn't really think it would work.
But I mean seriously, there had to be some reason why it was implemented, I'm just trying to guess that.
Maybe the IWDII creators didn't think that far. I guess we'll never know...

hey - some feats have to be at the end of the list - as each list has an end!
...and in IWD2 there are even worse feats then GC!
btw. the feats are based on the D&D rules and there are other CRPGs where GC makes much more sense then in IWD2 (TOEE for example!)
But if you use an extended range weapon like the spear 9/12-whatever (can't remember the name as I never used it) GC could make at least some sense even in IWD2!

Great Cleave isn't that bad!
As is suggested above you could use it to conserve spells or just to kill off many creatures quickly.
What if the creatures just blasted by an area effect spell get up and try to find the person who wanted them dead, that's a time you might want Great Cleave.
I sdo agree that there are better feats in IWDII and NWN but it still has its uses .

I'm currently using 12 paces (the spear) in my HOF game, and its a great melee weapon for HOF since you don't need to get close enough to the enemies for them to fight back, thus my summons can take the brunt of the damage when my WoB's don't kill all the enemies.
But GC is totally useless in HOF mode. Cleave is next to useless as well, so I use neither skill.

A lot of things in IWDII don't make sense until you reach a special circumstance or build. I never understood the purpose of the Moonblade of Selune. By removing the STR bonus, it becomes a cruddy weapon and I normally just sell it. Until my current game....
In my current game, I have a Silverstar of Selune [human, rogue (1) / Silverstar (x), chaotic good, 8 STR]. This weapon is perfect for my Silverstar. Ignoring the obvious RP advantages, the moonblade ignores my clerics strength penalty from the damage calculations and only weighs two pounds! This weapon allowed my cleric to join in the melee fighting when needed and still be somewhat effective.
Great cleave is great in specific circumstances, but useless otherwise.
