XP for mass goblins

Post by Johnny »

IWD2, following D&D 3ed, does not award XP for monsters that are far beneath the party. However, a horde of minor monsters can still be quite deadly. In a PnP game, the DM would regard the encounter as a whole, but IWD2 does not. So, I when I kill a horde of orcs after three failed attempts and get no XP for it, I'm pretty peeved. Perhaps they should take a leaf from BG2, where enemies always gave at least a little XP.

I'm currently soloing through as a monk and trying to assault the goblin fortress, but I keep getting killed because my monk isn't advancing fast enough to take on the garrison. Speaking of monks, I have another niggle: why didn't they reuse the monk avatar from BG2, who could kick as well as punch? My monk attacks with an invisible sword.

There are mods available at Sorcerer's Place to take care of the first two of your problems.

The third solution is, don't solo a monk. I haven't ever heard of it being done successfully. Do a search on "solo monk" to see why.

Actually, I just got through soloing a monk. It was quite tough but I managed. ;)

...with completing BS and completly without cheating (e.g. level-squatting, not taking all levels and then adjusting EXP via trainer or importing extra potions) ?!!

I didn't finish BS (Battlesquares, right?) I actually forgot to go back and do that. I didn't cheat at all, though. It took a lot of trips to healers/ carrying potions since I really couldn't heal myself much, but I didn't use any mods or level squat.

Like I said, it was really hard, I used stealth alot to escape battles and heal my character. Sometimes I had to reload fights until I figured out the proper strategy, but really, it was easier than I expected after I hit level 10 or 12. High level monks don't get hit by much. (Except those Slayer Knights.)

For some battles I had to resort to Cloudkiss? I think it's called, a returning throwing axe that does electrical damage, but mostly I just used my fists/quivering palm/stunning blow.

My character was a Tiefling btw. ended at level 25 with these stats:

Str 18
Dex 20
Con 10
Int 10
Wis 24
Cha 2

Saves:
Fortitude +17
Reflex +20
Will +24

Spell resistance 35
Damage reduction 20/+1

...how did you reach level 25 in normal game?!

AFAIR you don't get any EXP for fighting Yuan-Ti beyond average party level 14!

When soloing without level-squatting and/or muling you should reach an average party-level 12 to 15 early in game - but then you won't get any EXP for most enemies!

and quest EXP is given per head!

If you manage to reach ~level 20 at Kundahar, beating the normal game with a solo monk should be doable.

I would guess that the ice-temple / BS, and the pal-quest (can you do this with a solo monk?) should be the biggets problems...

...btw. how did you fight the 4 golems in the tomb & the guardian?

Let's see... most of my late game experience came from quest rewards. I think I leveled up twice in the severed hand from doing all the little quests there.

I didn't fight the 4 golems at the tomb because my char wouldn't have looted the tomb and I wouldn't have recieved any XP for killing them anyway.

I killed the Guardian with a quivering palm after getting squished two or three times...

The ice temple was actually quite easy except for Sherincal, whom I beat after getting several buffing spells cast on me by that spider-riding gnome fellow.

Really I did solo it with a monk, I'm not making this up :D
