Influence and dialog choice problems (SPOILERS)

Post by HK47 is my Hero »

Hello, all. I’m late to the KOTOR party, and this is my first post here, so please, be gentle. I’ve run across what are either bugs or odd gameplay issues and could use some help.

Because KOTOR2 is so buggy, I’ve had to read spoilers, and use the savegame editor to check some variables, to see if there’s a problem. That’s where I found out:

- I’ve worked Mira up to 98 influence, and have played through a dialog that hints that she’s ready to become a Jedi (“Let me show you what Kreia showed me” – “OK!”). But, there’s still no option to let her become one, as I had with Disciple. She commanded the “B-Team” assault on the Sith tomb on Dxun and was told by the Sith Master that she had potential; I STILL can’t unlock her as a Jedi. Any ideas?

- I’ve worked Disciple up to 100 influence, but still have a dialog option that comes back as “Influence: Failure.” Huh? It’s in the “Do you hate the Jedi?” series of questions.

- Again, with Disciple at 100 influence I still don’t have any Romance options. I wouldn’t WANT it – what I really want is a “Kick Disciple in his teeth the next time he says ‘You have left me an opening!’” option. But, no romance options are even on the list. I snooped in the Save Game file and found a “Love” variable for both Visas and the Handmaiden for the male PC. But, nothing for the ladies with Disciple or Atton. I read on the Forums that the Atton romance was cut, even though they left in the jealousy dialog with Disciple; did they cut the female romances entirely?

And also a few minor gripes:

- I know that item placement is random in KOTOR2, but it’s a lousy system the way they went about it. In the B-Team assault on the Sith tomb, I found the Circlet of Saresh – possibly THE best item for a lightsider from the first game – on the body of a lowly Sith trooper outside the building. What was he doing, smuggling it out to his cousin Leroy the Jedi? Come on, Obsidian!

- Why no short lightsabers??? I’ve found exactly one, again in the tomb. And it’s not upgradeable. And it’s pretty much useless to a lightsider. I liked using two sabers, rather than a single double-bladed one; but now, the only way to do it is to be “unbalanced” and take a penalty.

- I like the rare saber colors, and managed to find a viridian crystal. But because they’re rare, even if I FOUND a short lightsaber I couldn’t be color-coordinated.

The saving grace of this game is HK-47’s dialog. His description of “Love” was even better than Mira’s way of handling men!

So? Show her what Kreia showed you. Make up a party with Mira and go to the area outside the entertainment complex on Nar Shaddaa. Job done.
- I’ve worked Disciple up to 100 influence, but still have a dialog option that comes back as “Influence: Failure.” Huh? It’s in the “Do you hate the Jedi?” series of questions.
Not all influence-based conversation options require high influence to work. A good example is asking Handmaiden about Atris. With lowish influence, Handmaiden will answer that Atris had feelings for you. With high influence she won't answer in case she spoils her chances with you.

I always ask the "Do you hate Jedi" line in the enclave sub-level where I first find Disciple with no problems at all, so I can only presume that this conversation option is similar to the one with Handmaiden.
- I read on the Forums that the Atton romance was cut, even though they left in the jealousy dialog with Disciple; did they cut the female romances entirely?
Pretty much. Chris Avellone is not a fan of overt Romances like those in KotOR 1 (and neither am I).

KotOR II just uses romance to give some tension to the group and to set up various end-game sequences whereby the least favoured love interest would be corrupted by the dark side and fight the most favoured on Malachor. These sequences hit the cutting room floor when LucasArts cut over two months off the release date. The scene where Atton fights Sion, is found injured or dying and declares that he loves a female exile also hit the cutting room floor.

And also a few minor gripes:
- I know that item placement is random in KOTOR2, but it’s a lousy system the way they went about it.
Mostly agreed. Like the influence system it isn't quite finished. It is better, however, than having fixed, hugely valuable loot, like the Circlet of Saresh on Kashyyk and that lightside robe in the Shryrack Caves on Korriban from Kotor I. Once you find those, the path through the middle of the game just isn't non-linear anymore. :p

It's just a shame that unique loot isn't and some Jedi loot crops up in illogical places.
- Why no short lightsabers???
Saber drops are random. Sometimes you can be swimming in short sabers, sometimes double-bladed sabers. You were just very unlucky.

Thanks for the input. I didn’t realize that Mira’s conversion was location-based. As it turns out, I accidentally dragged her through the area on my way to the endgame last night, when I was visiting every place I could EXCEPT Dantooine to try to clean up anything I’d missed.

I read about the cut battles between teammates while downloading patches. I hope the TSLRP can get them back; they’d help give a little closure. I didn’t mind the ending so much except that it wasn’t really an ending – it played exactly like the camera had run out of film before the final resolutions. Um, didn’t the ship get demolished and fall into a gorge? Did the remote’s weapon upgrades pack a bigger punch on G0T0 than anyone suspected? And how did Hanharr get off that rock before it blew?

Like I mentioned in the first post, I wasn’t planning on taking the lost romances anywhere. But, after the buildup of the Atton vs. Disciple cutscenes, talking to HK about love, it seemed unfinished to not even have a dialog choice about it. Like the game, you’re being pulled along and suddenly it’s all over.

As for the Jedi conversions, next up is a run through the Dark Side. It also has the side benefit of more HK47 dialogue, which is never a bad thing. I’m curious to see if Disciple’s over-the-top sincere dialogue gets a little nastier when he’s sitting at the bottom of the alignment scale…

Nope. That's what I meant when I said the influence system isn't quite finished. Apart from a few key conversations (the Jedi conversion conversations) they retain their character and say the same things. The fact that he is a Sith makes no difference to Disciple, he is still a naive little Jedi-worshipper.

* EDIT * You're companions and other NPCs make some random comments about your skincare regimen when you are DS, and the Jedi Masters behave a little differently, I think, but that's it *

Did the remote’s weapon upgrades pack a bigger punch on G0T0 than anyone suspected?

*SPOILERS* I believe the TSLRP is fixing this, but in case you wanted to know what was supposed to happen, as GoTo pinned the remote, as soon as his conversation ended, HK-47 walked in and saved the day. That is definately something I want to see, as anything involving HK is ok in my book :)

Assuming you like HK-47 (the name gave it away :D ) then you are going to love the TSLRP. two of the deleted bits that they are restoring are specifically related to the ole bucket o' bolts: the HK factory, and the end result between the feuding droids. One of the clips I heard was Atton remarking on the interrogation techniques of HK-47: "That is one sick droid"

nope, I remember when I went through on my DS run, I had to sacrifice some of my DS alignment in order to raise influence with Disciple, whose influence gain basically consists of telling him how super you think the Republic is. ;)

And how did Hanharr get off that rock before it blew?

That's a good question... it won't matter on my next run because I will be taking the DS path, which means that Mira will end up icing him :D (bless the modding community, I really didn't like Hanharr on my first DS run.) Although I wonder what the heck happens to Mira, since she is still wandering around on the surface while I am carving through the Trayus academy...

It also has the side benefit of more HK47 dialogue, which is never a bad thing.

one of my favorites was after you get your alignment below a certain point, and HK-47 is just tickled to be in your party. He reminds me of that one redneck friend everyone has (or needs to have)vthat just loves to do things like mess around with explosives and poke roadkill and hit stop signs with empty beer bottles. He's only happy when he's doing bad stuff, but when he is, he gets REALLY happy :)

Um, didn’t the ship get demolished and fall into a gorge?

heh, I always assumed that's what Bao-Dur was doing the entire time, since he plays a rather minimal part in the game (unless you are like me, who made him a badass Jedi Guardian ;) )

KOTOR 2 influence guide

this internet guide written by someone with a lot of spare time on their hands comes in handy. If you are like me and you love to have every character become a jedi, then you'll end up planning your game around this guide :)

also, a high charisma can lead to more influence with your allies, as well as the Jedi Master/Sith Lord prestige classes.

The easy way: Use the save game editor to snoop. To some extent, you can tell just by the way they talk to you as well. Playing lightside, I was expecting G0T0 to start shooting at me, he obviously hated me so much.

Like w666tvr said, item drops are random. The only short saber I actually picked up that entire game was the Dark Side one in the tomb...which isn't upgradeable. :P

HK47's lines and voice acting are the best in the game by a mile. Especially compared to Bao-Dur, for instance, who half the time talks so quietly that he's almost impossible to hear. His sarcasm leaves me laughing so hard I choke, and I'm working on a Dark Side game just to hear him talk more. I'm really, really looking forward to this project!

Well, if your done everything, go back to the Ebon Hawk, and I think that Atton will have a message for you, or go into the ebon hawk and leave again and he will have one for you. That's how it worked for me when I got stuck.

Oh yes, and don't forget to resuplly yourself with anything you need, cause you never know...
