I think I may have foiled up this quest on one of my attempts to finish the game.
The assassin that pops up after you sell some of Lareth's possessions didn't pop up when I sold his boots to the blacksmithin Hommlet or when I sold his necklace to the Jeweler. Do you have to sell his equipment to the Trading Post spies to cause the Assassin to appear? If so, I think I messed up 'cuz I basically killed the Trading Post spies already.

I believe you do have to sell the items to the trading post guys. The assassin will show up almost immediately, and afterwards you can go in and accuse them of sending "il assassino" after you.
That's why you'll see recommendations to sell the plate boots: they aren't worth much, so selling them to the guys who give a bad price won't cost you too much: certainly much less than you'll get from the assassin's gear in return.
Also, it's not really a "quest" per se, just in case you're expecting to see something in the log or an experience reward or something. Won't happen.

(Use the lastest 1.3 build - it's still beta, but stable and far better than 1.2)

Gotcha . . .thanks
Yeah, I suspected as much about selling to the Trading Post peeps - after all, they're suppose to be working as spies so they should be the ones to report you when they see u pawning off some of Lareth's trinkets.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting a quest-type finale to killing the assassin. But I liked killing him to get the Dagger of Venom and a few other small trinkets that could be pawned. Luckily, killing the Trading Post buggers netted me with a DoV anyway, although it would have been great to get another DoV to arm both my Paladin and Fighter with DoVs in their offhand.
(Surprise, surprise, my paladin doesn't fall for using poison on his enemies. I wonder if in the D&D rules, it's considered dishonorable for a paladin to use poison. The blackguard class uses poison as a special class feat.)

From the SRD entry for the Palladin:
Code of Conduct
A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class abilities if she ever willingly commits an evil act.
Additionally, a paladin’s code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

Drinking more than one beer in the local tavern (drinking contest quest) will make th Palladin fall, using (evil) poison, the favorite medium of Tymora, does not.
A small designer flop if you ask me. A great game, but the developers seem to have spent to little time actually playing Rpg's...
Onwards!!
