For me bigger question is why Obi-Wan didn't recognize the droids when they met again in Ep IV?
That's easy. When George Lucas made Episode, uh, 4, he didn't know that R2D2 and C3PO were going to be spending a lot of time with Anakin and Obi-Wan in Episodes, uh, 1-3. By the same token, Lucas probably didn't know that Chewbacca had fought side-by-side with Yoda or that Padme died when Leia was way too young to remember what she looks like. (Force or no Force, babies just can't see very well right after they're born.)
It's no mystery when someone can't foresee what they're going to think of twenty years from now. I still think the big mystery is why Lucas can't grasp facts that are right in front of him. He realizes that Darth Vader is younger than Obi-Wan Kenobi, right? He can see that Luke's whining is really annoying, can't he? He can see Yoda can't be taken seriously, can't he? He can see that the Empire is actually a much better form of government than the Republic, given the critique his own characters make, can't he? That's what really puzzles me.
