The Fall
Well, Silver Style Entertainment presents The Fall on the Games Convention in Germany, Europes biggest game fair. One active member of the SSE-Board ( "Blitzlord") already visited their post-apoc looking booth. He talked to Carsten Strehse ( lead designer) and Julian Dasgupta ( coder), was able to play The Fall and finally wrote down his first impressions.

For those who aren't proficient in the German language - A shortened translation:
The version he played was running with a resolution of 800x600 and although it didn't look great he had to admit that it looked good. He felt the post-apocalyptic atmosphere almost immediately, NPCs and other objects were part of the setting and not negatively outstanding and he liked the way the static background was connected to the dynamic levels. The landscape and the sky look natural - but the sky is static and thus doesn't move ( at least in that version of the game).
The animations are OK, although he didn't like the way "running" is animated. According to him it looks unnatural, like the character hops faintly. He didn't remain silent about it; he told it Julian or Carsten.
He was impressed by the way the perspective is handled. One can easily zoom in and out - thus being able to play the game Gothic-Like or from the isometric perspective.
The areas he was able to have a look at seemed to be "alive", full of details with many NPCs roaming around.
He was able to start a new game, create a new character and play the first seconds of the game. I don't want to spoil anything, that's why I leave out the part he tells about the happenings of the beginning ( to be honest, I even left that part out while reading. ). He liked the detailed skill-system which is very similar to the one in Fallout and Arcanum but critizises the lack of the possibility to widely destruct the environment and the lacking physical-system ( compared to games as Silent Storm or Soldiers which have these features). SSE justifies this with The Fall being a RPG, not a strategic-war-sim. But even without these features The Fall leaves enough room for tactics and strategy, Blitzlord admits.
According to Blitzlord the controls are intuitive and easy to learn. The gamer can decide between the mouse, keyboard or both. Every partymember and/or vehicle can be directed by mouseclicks or the usual W-A-S-D-Keys plus many hotkeys.
He can't say anything about the sound or music. On one hand because he couldn't hear any due to the various surrounding decibel-sources at the fair and on the other hand because most of the sound-adjustment is still in a work-in-progress-stage.
The official release date is 22. October ( BUT: only for Germany. I don't know when the game will be released in other countries)
Arg, sorry for the bulky translation. Couldn't do better today...need more sleep ( I know, that's a lousy excuse...)
Looking forward to trying this game when it is released.

Yep, me too! But I think that's obvious, isn't it?
Right now everyone has a chance to be mentioned in the Credits. All you have to do is...well...make threads like this one in other Forums ( ), make some NPCs or shortstories which can make it into the game or the Addon and/or make constructive suggestions according to the Addon, maybe some ideas and so on.

Holla, interested in a trailer? - Link
Looks great. Maybe faintly too much 'action', but this could be just an effect of the movie. I hope so. But the driving vehicles look awesome, the animations are great as well as graphics at all. Well, the trailer-soundtrack isn't my kind of music, but it's only the soundtrack - although it's the same group which makes parts of the soundtrack for the game. Darkseed. But they make many types of music - dark ethno, dark metal and so on. Dark ethno is what is said to be used in The Fall. The game will be released next month in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by Deep Silver, Co-Publisher. Not Big Ben anymore, as it still was stated a couple of days back. Big Ben has changed its sales strategy, concentrating on selling low budget games only. Publishers for other countries are still unknow - neither a release date...
Greetings. RPGVault posted our latest developer's diary. Silver Style's Adrian Kästorf elaborates on how the development of a project like The Fall is being managed from a technical point of view. Check out the article if you want to know more about the tools we're using to manage the programming and testing. There also are some screenshots illustrating glitches the testers ran across while playing the game.
Bumping this, wondering if anybody has any sorts of information about the english langauged release?
I've been waiting for it to ship overseas, but as far as I know they want to work out all the bugs in the game before they do.
This thread at their forums implies a September/October release by the fans, but the official word is 'who knows'?
At least more features will be added

Wow! I only just saw this thread. This game looks like it could well fall into the same league as BG2 and PST! If so, it would be encouraging, I'd pretty much given up on these types of games ever being produced again.

I'm hoping it's close to the quality of the original 'Fallout' series. They were, IMO, behind BG2, the best games Black Isle ever developed. There were non-linear endings, extremely unique character development, etc - I haven't seen anything like them since.
Like I said though, it doesn't have to be equal, it just has to be close and I'll be happy.
Hopefully this game will spark the North American market for other games like it. It'll have to be really good though...
The German version has already been released, correct? It's unfortunate it's taken over a year to get an English language version ready for release. Any clue how the German version has been received?
They have some press on the main site...mostly positive. Out of the two ratings I saw, they were both 85%.
This game looks promising, I've been looking for something to fill the void that Fallout left in my life and this could be it.
Fallout and Fallout 2 remain my all time favourite RPG's, even after all these years.
Asking for it to be "Fallout" good may be overzealous. I'd be more than happy with a strong moderate length post-apocalyptic role playing game...
I know. What I meant was that as long as it's a pretty good wasteland RPG, I'll be happy.

So. Does anyone know when or if it's coming to North America?
EDIT - Actually found something interesting at NMA: one of the SSE developers (Carsten Streshe) said in response to a fan who was pondering whether to just buy the German version,
I would strongly recommend to wait. The US version includes so many enhancements (like more quests, more weapons, completly new characters, trunks for vehicles, engine updates and dozens of other things) that it's worth waiting.
