newbie help

Post by miggles »

I'm not very familiar with action games, but i am very familiar with RPGs. I'm wondering what classes or strategy would be best for someone not very good at action games. Pure fighting or pure magic or balanced or whatever. I've played all the major RPGs of the last few years -- BG, NWN, KOTOR, Morrowind, ToEE. I've also played alot of the classics -- Fallout, Wizardry, Ultima in my tender youth. But I've never really played action games and Dungeon Lords apparently has an action game type combat system. Also, I'm disabled and not very good at pure reflex gameplay with complicated controls. I guess my question is, for my first time through or at least until I get familiar with the controls, what's my best bet to start out with in terms of a character?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There's a lengthy sequence at the start of the game where you won't be able to add classes to your character, and where you won't gain access to a lot of spells. That is, at the start of the game, whether it's your class or not, you'll have to act like a melee fighter, and the combat there should give you a good idea if you can play the game or not.

So I'd suggest you start as a fighter, and then, to make the later combat sequences a little easier, add mage classes to your character. Your melee skills should make it easier to defeat tough single opponents, and your mage spells (like blast nova) should make it easier for you to defeat multiple opponents.

The good thing is, unlike in other games, that it isn't necessary to gain a level for skill point distribution. You can do it in progress, so you can make accent on figher skills or magic skills as you see it is useful. Another thing with guilds - choose carefully. As for me, i have more RPG experience too. When i start new RPG first time i usually play as a cleric - good mix of skills, ability to wear armor... Now playing adept too. Now have sorcerer/paladin classes, later i'll add wizard. Damn it, when i made choice i didn't know that repair, alchemy and identify don't work... Have it in mind. Good luck!

I agree. Magic can take a little more coordination than fighting, but you gotta be on the ball for some of the fighting too. I think, at least to get a feel for it, go Urgoth for race, and Fighter for class. Then you can pump up your melee fast and easy. This includes strength and vitality, in addition to your weapons and armor skills. Also, it may help to hit your "e" or your "c" key to get into your inventory or character setup and puase enemy attacks. Spells (started by you or by enemies) complete, and new encounters still spawn. That will let you cast spells and pause, or use start to use a potion and finish without new attacks hitting you.
