Problem with henchman quests, NWN original campaign *minimum of spoilers*

I'll get straight to the point: you're supposed to give the quest items to your hench(wo)man, right? By simply dragging-and-dropping it onto him or her, I figured. Well, it just tells me I can only give potions to hirelings, and not other items. Since it's the original campaign, I cannot control their inventories, so now I really don't know what to do... I can't talk to them more about the quest, either. Any tips will be very appreciated.

Oh, while we're on the subject of henchmen, there also seems to be a bug when they perish. Instead of me needing to go to the temple and have them resurrected, they reappear instantly at my side, although not in my party. If the hireling survives the battle on her second life, I can talk to her and she'll say something that implies she just got resurrected. If she dies a second time, while not in my party, she is gone forever. Highly agitating, to say the least. Could it perhaps be related to the issue above?

Oh, in case it matters, I'm using version 1.61 (Mac) with both SoU and HotU installed.

You shouldn't have to "give" the item to your henchperson. They usually notice as soon as you acquire the item and start a dialogue. I don't remember if they actually take the quest item from your inventory or not, but I think they do. If you still have the item and didn't get the dialogue, I'm not sure what went wrong. Possibly a script misfired. Were they out of visual range when you acquired the item? Do you have a saved game reasonably prior to finding the item so you can replay and see if it works the second time?

As to your second question, I believe that is a change made in SoU or HotU. I noticed that it started happening in my community-developed modules right after I installed the expansions. Nothing really to worry about, except you have to make avoid that second death. Which is generally good advice, I suppose...

I suppose a script misfire sounds like a likely explanation. I think the hireling was within visual range, but I am not sure. It was quite some time ago, and I only discovered that a) I still had that bloody journal and b) the sidekick's quest stopped progressing. Because I was nearing the end of the chapter, I wanted to finish quests off before going on, the sidekick quest as well.

Another explanation, I suppose, could be that I never found her quest item in chapter one... Now it's a tad late for that, probably. I wouldn't mind getting the amulet or whatever, but it's not really vital. I just want the story and quest, dagnabbit.

As for the second death, oh, alright then. I will just have to make sure she stays alive and well while not in my party, then. Wouldn't want to send her off into a lake of fire or anything such.

This is indeed the case, yes. You can't do quests in later chapters if you haven't done the prior ones.


As for giving the items, then it is all done via convesation with the henchmen. Once you have the item - and have gotten the quest - you'll get a convesation option regarding the item.

well it dosent matters whether your hirelings are with you or not when you acquired quest items related to them.. i never hired any henchmen (or women) but throughout the chapter kept collecting quest items and in the end of the chapter went to each one of them and hired them (just for the sake of quests) and earned xps. also that you cannot complete quest related to chapter 1 in chapter 2 and like that.. the problem with you may be because you did not completed any quest in chapter 1 and so you cannot complete later quests.. i dont know.. this could be one of the explanations

I don't get that. My trigger for giving over the Quest item was only achieved by hearing the WHOLE of their tale. However, they kept refusing to tell me more of their tale until after I had gone up another level. If you approach them at the end of chapter one you a) won't go up any levels in their presence and b) haven't been with them long enough for them to trust you with their tale. Or does this all change if you do it right at the end?

The "leveling up" trigger is the same whether or not they are in your party.
So if you have one henchman and level up - that triggers the possibility for getting the next part of all the other henchmens quest.
You must however have them in group to hear their tale, and you need to talk to them a couple of times, because they don't tell the tale in full.

This way you can basically do all henchmen quests while still only travelling mainly with one henchmen and then leaving him shortly for the quest of the other henchmen.

yup thats it.. by the end of the chapter you have enough level to hear the entire tale.. so what i do is that i repeatedly ask them to continue their tale and they do.. so after couple of times (mostly after 3 times of bugging them ) they complete their tale, ask me for help and i gave them the item they need. simple. regarding their trust, its no problem. believe me they are dumb enough to understand that they were not with you the entire length of the chapter
