Somehow the third book always sticks with me. I like the revelation at the end very much, with Sirius Black in that abondened creepy house - always very exciting. It's a nice thing that at least not *every* book ends with a Voldemort encounter.

Here's the whole list:

The Prisoner of Azkaban
The Sorcerer's Stone
The Goblet of Fire
The Half-Blood Prince
The Chamber of Secrets
The Order of the Phoenix

How about you, Steve?

well, i like them all, but if i must choose, i would say ... Sorcerer's Stone. Mainly because its the first glimpse into the wizarding world. It gives you the first look of Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, and the main character ... Harry.

Um.... This is the third Harry Potter topic you've started.
Wouldn't it make sense to collapse them all into a single thread? ;)

I like the Harry Potter series, don't misunderstand me, but three separate threads seems a touch..... excessive? ;)

To answer your question though, tough call.
I would have to say it's a toss up between the first book, Prisoner of Azkaban, and the most recent addition to the series.

Order of the Phoenix is my favorite because of the way the various plot threads merged together near the end of the book. I also enjoyed the battle of the Ministry of Magic. As much as I enjoy J.K. Rowling's writing, I was a little bit afraid that she wouldn't be able to pull off scenes involving wizard battles, but she did it with flying colors.

Goblet of Fire could have been my favorite if a couple of things had been different:

SPOILERS

I really enjoyed "Mad Eye" Moody, and I would have enjoyed watching him become Harry's mentor. Maybe he could have given Harry access to a sparring dummy or advice on how to become an Auror. Instead, Moody turned out to be an imposter. It would have been better and it would have made more sense to me if the imposter had been posing as Barty Crouch (who was under the Imperius Curse) instead of Moody.

I also would have liked to get to know Cedric Diggory better. He was a great character, but I never really had a chance to get attached to him.

Also, I'd just like to say that in the battle scene in Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore made Yoda (with his lightsaber antics) look like Kermit the Frog in Muppet Treasure Island. George Lucas certainly has his visionary moments and I respect him for that, but he can't hold a candle to J.K. Rowling.

You're only 200 pages into it and you already find it captivating? Just wait until you've read about 500 pages. That's when it really gets going. :)

as an answer to your comment dragon winch, how often does a new book come out? How often do you get the chance to post a popular thread on HP? i want to post on the subject as much as i can until it becomes old news. ;)
And also would't it seem a bit ... off topic ... if i posted a poll then started asking questions about other stuff??
Im sure there will be even more posts when the 4th movie comes out this november.

@ Steven,
fair enough :) I might just be suffering from HP deluge. My son has just finished the book and it's basically the only thing he talks about.

I dunno. I like the third, though the fifth had it's moments.

@DW- I really can't talk about it at my house yet. My dad, like me, has finished it, but my mom just now started reading it (I think she's around chap 5), and neither of my younger brothers have started reading it yet, so I can't talk to my dad about it when they're around, so I won't spoil it.
I wanted to change my sig, but I can't think of anything to change it to :(
