in my world, neutrality, is a way of life that some people try to achive, either they are NG, or NE, there isnt a stright N, or CN, so the gem dragons would work that well.

so there isnt anything else i have to do to make it a playable char Rob?

Well a dragon is rather simple actually.

Example:
Red dragon Wyrmling
HD 7
LA 4
Character level 11

Roll for stats and fill them in.
Skills: (6+ int mod) x (HD+3)
Feats: 1 starting + 3 p/hd (can be replaced by class levels)

Attacks are all given on page 69 in the MM; melee and breath.
Alter them with your own stats if you don't work with the standard dragon stats. (rolling is more logical IMO)

From the dragon list you take the following:
- Natural armor bonus
- Size
- BAB
- Calculate base saves (minus stat bonusses and add your own stat bonusses)
- Fly speed and manuverability
- Special abilities

On later age levels, add from these lists, such as sorcerer caster levels, spell resistance and frightfull presence. Don't forget feats etc, just like it's a normal character.
Guinness is good for you.
Gives you strength.

Correct, I've noticed the same thing, this is how it works if I read the Draconomicon correctly.
The LA is 4 at least and 6 at max, so that makes a young dragon a lvl 19 character when including his HD. LA doesn't rise above 6.

Also the racial modifiers are nowhere to be found but this is due to the fact that this differs per dragon race. Discuss this with your DM is my advice.
Minus for dex, the rest are all plusses.

well, i am the DM, there in lies the problem. im thinking of going with a blue dragon and a bronze dragon, so all i really have to do for older dragons is to just take there HD as there lvl? since they dont have a LA.

HD plus closest LA, so for older dragons that would be 6.
If you aren't playing a dragon but using them as opponents, just use core stats from the age you want to use.

This calculation is for character level though, for the actual CR look at the CR list at both dragons. A character level of 20 isn't a CR of 20, you know.
