Why can't I go to Gnoll Stronghold?

Post by Bojangles »

I have acquired Minsc upon entering Nashkel so I have the Gnoll Stronghold quest, yet for some reason I can't go there. I mean it's on my map, but I can't click on it. I've been putting it off, but Minsc is losing his patience. I also really don't want to get rid of him because of his charished craziedness and the times we've shared in BG 2( I bought BG after beating BG 2(wierd I know)). You're trying to get there through the south exit of AR 4600 (North of Gnoll Stronghold), aren't you? You can't go directly there, you have to travel to the appropriate wilderness areas. You probably have done that, though. In which case, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Try all the areas west of Nashkel. The one with the xvart village should allow you access to the Stronghold. Failing that try the other ones.

From Nashkel, exit the map from the southern (bottom) edge. A nameless wilderness area will appear on the world map, south of Nashkel. From this new wilderness area, exit the map from the western (left) edge, and another nameless wilderness area will appear. And so on. Keep going west'ish, until you can exit a bordering nameless wilderness map directly into the Gnoll Stonghold.

This is one difference between BG1 & 2: BG2 doesn't have the in-between nameless wilderness areas. Good or bad difference? Probably a topic for another thread.

Note: after you've been to an area once, you can skip the nameless wilderness areas, and jump directly to that area from anywhere. But remember: the farther you're jumping from, the more in-game hours it will take to travel. This may be pertinent if doing a time-based quest...

I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

***Minor Minsc Spoiler***

When you first accept Minsc's quest and he first joins your party in BG1, do his quest asap!

He is, shall we say, a little on the unreasonably tempermental side when you first meet him. As opposed to BG2, where Boo thinks you're just ducky.

bad news

I must thank you guys/girls for guiding me to gnoll stronghold, but it seems it's all in vein as upon my entering gnoll stronghold, I can't get past the bridge before Minsc decides he's waited long enough even though we're there. So I loaded the autosave over and over to no avail. I killed him as honorably as I could after he attacked me. I've yet to play further in hopes that someone will reply with a remedy to this problem. I'm giving it until Sunday (8/7/05), then I'm moving on.

If you want to make a quest there.. get Edwin and kill her... If you want Minsc though, i guess you're a tad late.

There may be some kind of CLUAConsole cheat to extend the time on Minsc's quest.

I dunno if this works cos I haven't tried it but... Get Minsc killed, rescue Dynaheir and then resurrect Minsc.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

thanks

thanks for your replies. I think I'll try kicking him out of my party and having him join again or try a cluconsole thing. If all else fails I'll try the resurrect thing.
I truly thank you all

:( relying on autosaves is not a good thing for this game.... as you've prolly learned thru this experience. in your case, you've seen that no matter how often you load your autosave, it's not likely to change the outcome of this particular situation, as you're on a timer. a regular savegame from the moment you accept minsc's quest would be much easier to work with, as you could replay it, shaving off the necessary couple of days needed to keep minsc alive and happy, get dynaheir (both of whom rock, in my estimation, and who's participation sorta drive much of the BG/ToSC/BG2/ToB plot).

but that's just my opinion. :)

Good advice ves :) I remember on my first run through BG, I overestimated the length of time to rescue Dynaheir... I had to make several reloads to try and sprint to the Gnoll Stronghold; if only I had kept earlier saves... :o

I was finally able to complete the quest without killing Minsc. I kicked him out of my party, did the quest and invited him back in (but I didn't recieve any xp for some reason). Since he would not join my party without Dynaheir I ended up kicking him out anyway because of my liking of the others in my party, most of whom were in my bg2 party. I think I might just play the rest of the game with 5 people in honor of Minsc anyway. Thanks everyone for your help.

If you wanted Minsc without being saddled with Dynaheir, you could've just gotten her killed and removed her from the party as was mentioned in other posts. People often do the same thing with other pairs of NPCs as well, but especially with Minsc, since he's just too good to pass up.

Incidentally, if you had the means to do so, you could've also tried charming Minsc when he went nuts about Dynaheir.

SInce you killed him, you could take along Ajantis who is a reasonably good fighter (paladin) and can be found in the ankheg farm.

If the map icon is greyed out , you have to be adjacent to the area to go there. If it is blue, you can click on it from anywhere.

Ankheg Farm; that sounds like a secret underground facility, where questionable characters are breeding Ankhegs to support their evil doings - lol...

Well, I call it that since it IS the breeding nest for Ankhegs and the icon on the map is a farm.
