Malkavian Ghosts

Post by yrthwyndandfyre »

I wanted to see what a Malkavian might see in the Ocean House. There was once a thread that suggested there was a hanging ghost in a closet there.

I checked it out, and it doesn't happen. See here: That contains everything that I saw that was unusual.

I've never seen the hanging ghost either, though I've not done the extensive testing you have. Is it possible that your inspection ability wasn't high enough? The original poster who mentioned the hanging woman had said it was in a closet in a 3rd floor room, apparently one of the rooms near the one that contains the Weekapaug Thistle.

Regardless, I found your screenshots very interesting. Did you reach any conclusions as to their meaning? I suppose,it seems that the Malks are actually seeing the spirits who throw the objects. It's unclear to me whether they always are meant to personify the murdered family, or not. Regardless, thanks for shraing those.

I know it's not fun to be so logical, but I think it bears mentioning to anyone whos getting excited:

The Malkavian Auspex doesn't show you anything that normal Auspex doesn't already see. What your seeing in most of your screen shots, I think, is places where the game desiners have placed NPC's, running on the spot, waiting for you to reach a certain location in order for them to sprint off down the corridor and out of sight... Such as they do when you get upstairs a lot. In short, your using Auspex to see through walls and spot NPC's who are waiting to be triggered to run away and scare the be-geebus outta you.

I know thats a little less thrilling then the idea of crazy Malkavian insight, but seeing the NPC trigger locations could easily be argued to be crazy insight. After all, if you were trapped in a creepy hotel with a guy who kept saying: "This corner" and every time you want around it, a ghost would freak you out, you'd think he had crazy insight too!

Picture number 10 is the ghost who points you in different directions vanishing from sight. Many of them do that when you get too close. Use Celerity to move quickly to their pre-set locations and you can see them point with their head hung in their creepy "already dead" manner and then puff out of existance. With Auspex on, the puff glows a little more.

Picture number 18 might explain how someone thought they saw a hangging ghost in a closet. Several of the ghost NPC's have their head down and their feet floating just off the floor when they point out different directions for you to go... If you were looking at a closet from a certain angle and Auspex (As it does) allowed you to see through the wall to the aura of the ghost three rooms across, it would seem like there was the aura of a hung ghost IN the closet... Ya see?

Anyway, thats my little bit of ghost busting for you. Sorry to make it all seem so mundane.

Oh, Edit!: The spirits who throw objects at you aren't NPC's installed in the game, so when you use Auspex you don't find an Aura. You'll notice the paintings and objects sparkle with or without Auspex and burst in white light when they fly around at you. They are just programed to fly towards you, not to be flung by a person. Would have been nice if maybe they threw in the aura of a creepy hand pushing them or something... Oh well.

The vast bulk of these 'ghosts' I had never seen before, but that may just mean that I was looking elsewhere when I was supposed to see them. The only one that freaked me out was screenshot number 2. That is a screenshot of the ghost of the father coming at you in the boiler room as you are going to turn on the power. Until I saw that, I didn't know there was a ghost in that room. That creeped me out a bit. The only one I'd seen before was the one on the second floor that points to the room (I only have an image of her 'poofing out').

In the main, though, I think they are images of the ghost of the mother waiting in various places to run across your path, as suggested. In most places, she is meant to guide you somewhere to further your objective and free her soul from her haunt. I haven't seen her in any of those places, but she definitely appears to be there. Perhaps many of these were un-implemented hints.

It is certainly reasonable to presume that the 'hanging ghost' might be one of these images seen from the right place at the right time, though. Quite a few of those images are of the same ghost seen from several different locations.

P.S. The odd thing was that in the places with the greatest amount of 'supernatural' activity, I didn't find any ghosts. As noted, those objects are meant to glimmer and then fly around on their own, but it's still odd that there weren't any ghosts present. Even in the places where you hear voices, there are no ghosts.

I've seen the "hanging ghost". I'm not sure if that's what it really is... but it's there. It is on the third floor in one of the rooms, but I don't remember it being by the thistle... I remember it being in a room down the hall that leads to the room where the fire begins (I could be wrong, don't harrass me if I am). Ironically, I was playing a Malkavian at the time... I did not notice this when I went through as a Ventrue, but that's because I wasn't paying attention to anything that wasn't in my direct path.

I havent seen the hangging ghost in ANY of the clans... Which isn't to say that it can't happen of course. I've noticed, by reading the forum and playing through a few times, that some events seem randomly triggered. For example, I left my TV on as Malk the whole time and it never told me any jokes, yet other people reported it like it happened to them every time... I was kinda dissapointed. Whats wrong TV, don't I SEEM like a jovial guy? I'm WEARING a raditation suit and wielding a fire axe for heavens sake.. What else says "Fun" better then THAT??

I figured out what it was... it was just another NPC trigger thingy in the next hall... using Auspex you can see the aura through the wall in the closet, giving the image of a woman hanging.

Odd, I was in my downtown haven a while back, and I walked in. My television was *not* on. I went to my tickle trunk to drop some stuff off, and the TV announcer told me a joke. When he was done, I spun around and yes, the TV was OFF. Presumably this is how a Malk experiences an hallucination.
