True Role-Playing Games

Post by BlueOval »

Has anyone here ever played Dragon's Gate or Dragon Realms? Both are text-only MMORPGs. Both rank as my all-time faves for online RPGs. Dragon's Gate has a bigger emphasis on role-play, Dragon Realms has a better all-around system.

I've been playing RPGs on the comp since Ultima and Wizardry I. I think Dragon Realms was probably my first online RPG, but I can't recall for sure. You have to pay a monthly fee to play these games, so I rather doubt that anyone younger than say.. 30? would pay to play a text-based-only game. But if you want to see what it means to role-play your character - I mean really get into the role of a dog/cat/dwarf/elf/et cetera - as opposed to endless levelling, you should check 'em out.

I'm familiar with DragonRealms, and with Gemstone III. Played in the latter for years, back in DOS days. Whom did you play in DragonRealms?

Yep! Couldn't agree more. There's a huge range of text-based MMORPGs out there with very different personalities. The only drawback is that the building part is usually hobbled by non-standardized controls: everybody and her brother creates perma-code, and doesn't bother making access to it anypthing like the rest of the code, in there. Simutronics' was much better, but as a player, you had no access to code for building. That was in the hands of the GMs.

I had an elven warmage named Ikaika Kalakaua. I had a few other characters too, but he was my main one. I used to hang a lot with a guy whose character's name was Dhara - he was a.. ranger? I forget what DR calls that class. I had some other pals in the game too, but I forget now all of their (character) names.

I occasionally played characters in there, and had a warmage that made it to about level 16 or so. But mostly, I was a GM, working behind the scenes for several years: buildings, areas, merchants, tons of items, quests, etc. That was a lot more fun than playing, for me. Left about 2-3 years ago.

If I were ever to take up that kind of game again, I'd want to be on the building side, once more. But the demands simply got too hectic in DragonRealms. What had been fun became a chore, with production quotas, etc. Damn good game, though. There are quite a few fine builder-style MUSHes out there, too.

I became a guide - sort of a junior GM - with Dragon's Gate. The building side of things is definitely interesting. As a guide, I was required to play my role just as if I was a normal character, so my contacts with the players was very enjoying as well. I no longer recall what level I made it to with my warmage. I would guess somewhere in the low 60s. I love both games equally, but DG definitely has the edge in roleplay. I've also tried several of the MUSHes, but if you asked me to give you a name, I cannot recall a single one. :\

>GO WEST
in front of you is a city, to the north there is a stream, to the east are plains, there is no way south
>GO WEST
you are in the weapon district of the city, behind you is a crossroads, in front of ou is the food district, to the north is a temple
>STEAL WEAPON
i do not understand
>STEAL
there is nothing to steal here
>ENTER SHOP
the shop has a large viartity of longswords
>STEAL LONGSWORD
i do not understand
>STEAL
you take a longsword, the owner detects you
the owner starts attacking you
>ATTACK
you tickle the owner
>EQUIP 1
you are not proficient with that weapon
the store owner attacks, you have 4 hp
>FLEE

No, you're describing what sounds like a single-player adventure game. We're discussing DragonRealms and Gemstone III, where you can't steal from stores, and where going in a direction is as simple as typing:

n e s or n,e,s

...to go north, then east, then south. And where there are literally more than 150 action verbs available to players. (GMs always had plenty more. ;) )
