Patch question

Post by Xandax »

So - just picked up this game in the bargain bin very cheaply, and decided to give it a go seeing as I've got little else to play at the moment :)

So I went to download patches, and noticed patch 1, 2 and 3. In itself this usually would yield no problems, except - patch 1 is larger then the other two leading me to the conclusion that - unlike normally - patches doesn't fix cumulative.
Does this mean I have to install all 3 patches (unusual), or is patch 3 enough and will fix patch 1 issues(as normal)?

Not that it is any problem - all 3 are downed, but I was just wondering before I run the patch(es)....

I just looked on the Atari website (UK version) and it only showed patch 1.0 :( . But then when I typed 'Temple of Elemental Evil' (and variations) into Atari's search engine, nothing was found :p .

Go to the Circle of Eight site, and you will see that there is an unofficial patch that is also worth installing. The Co8 site will tell you in what order to install the patches... as they should be installed in a certain order.

Well - might be for the us version then
http://www.atari.com/us/support/newfaq/ ... =DOWNLOADS

Although the Patch 1 listed seems to be for the EU/UK version.
But I just tried and install all of them - so we'll see if that messes up anything. :D

The best thing to do to play this unmodded is to install patch 2 only (you can put patch 1 too, but you don't need it, and patch 3 is to avoided in favor of...) then a fix called "temple.zip". You can get it here:

http://www.jadri.com/temple.zip
-or-
http://www.co8.org/files/patch/temple.zip

To install, after applying patch 2, replace the filed called "temple.dll" in the game's main directory with the one from the .zip. Then take the three folders from the .zip's "data" folder and add them to the game's "data" folder. This will solve the one problem that patch 3 solves, plus a few other major crash issues. It also adds spells that are supposed to be there according to D&D rules, but aren't for some reason, and lets you go to level 20 instead of just 10 (but you don't have to level past 10 if you don't wish to). In all, it's a better, more stable setup than patches 2 and 3. Also, if you later want to add fan mods like the one from co8, or the famous livonya mod, these are coded for patch 2, and often don't work with 3.

I bought this game a couple years ago and had a blast, but shelved it after the 9.0c-loot break.

Recently I've been trying to get a clean install so I downloaded a new copy from GameSpy. When I try to run the official patches from Atari (1,2, and 3)
they give pop-up error - 'Cannont fint ToEE, Any...' or 'Neither command line specified is an existing directory'

I see the previous posts about which patches to install, but I can't get past the errors in order to install patch 2. Is the GameSpy dowload already patched?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT - Update:
We were able to get things working by installing Co8's 3-0-4 patch and then the "temple.dll" fix and skipping over the steps for the official patches. thx.

Good to know.
It's generally best to avoid the downloadable version, which is pretty unstable. You may experience further problems down the line. Be warned.
The jewel case version is also sometimes problematic. The best version to get is the box version, if you can swing it.
