Different game due to low rep? [possible spoiler]

Post by Padawan »

Apologies if this has already been asked.

I played this game several times, and always kept my reputation high. Well, than, once, I tried to blow something more than just "red circle people". Suddenly, just before going to Druid's grove a man approached me and asked if I can poison these druids.

Now I wonder, are there more such different quests that rely on how high my rep is?

(the fact is that 1: I got a job and couldn't find the time to finish and 2: moved away and still didn't buy new computer)
Jump on my sword while you can, Evil.
I wont be as gentle.

In most respects, the game does not seem much different at all if your characters have a low Reputation. NPCs are rude to you or won't talk to you, and store prices are higher, and that's about it.

The main difference between playing a Good character or playing an Evil character is how YOU will feel about your character. You can approach the quests with the attitude "I am here to save the day" or with the attitude "Fear my wrath, for all will die in my wake". Even if the game itself is not much different, your own experience will be a lot different if you really get into the different roles.

The odd thing I feel is that you can have an evil character with a high rep. that still gets evil quests (despite the pointlessness of evil being good) and vice versa, rep. affects shop prices and if you have really low rep. guards and wizards can spawn in to oppose you. Despite all this the main charcter alignment and rep. can be seperate.

Virtue

Does anyone know if the virtue mod (never played w/ it) changes this?

There's no line of evil quests in the game, just a very few. If your rep gets low enough, merchants will close their stores, and you'll be attacked on site by city guards. In addition, good characters will leave a party with an extremely low rep, and vice versa.

Per the Virtue mod, from its listing at the Pocket Plane Group:

This mod sets out to remedy apparent flaws in the game's original system by splitting reputation into two separate variables: Reputation, which represents how people in the game feel about the party; and Virtue, which represents how morally correct the party's actions are. Virtue will now appear alongside reputation on the character screen, and be treated separately where appropriate.
Additionally, Virtue will affect your alignment, so if your Virtue goes down, it drags your alignment down with it. Party members also respond to Virtue instead of reputation, so you can have a party that feels your actions are good, even if everyone around you hates you. Additional familiar dialog has been written to account for the impact of changing alignment on your familiar.

Paladins will now fall after committing a SINGLE non-virtuous act, and rangers will now fall after their Virtue drops too low. You can get away with killing commoners without incurring a Reputation hit, so long as nobody sees you. Your Virtue always drops, however.

Some of the things for which you would previously have incurred no penalty will now
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I think it's actually character alignment that affects your quest options not so much your reputation level.

Playing an evil character isn't very enjoyable in Baldur's Gate 2 -_-.

Reputation is really only useful for lowering shop prices. What's stupid is that alignment is useless. You can "roll" a chaotic good barbarian and do nothing but goodly deeds during the whole SoA story, but if you *spoiler* give into one taint at the end of the game, you become evil. . . If you're a chaotic evil barbarian that does nothing but good for all of SoA, you stay evil. . .

Not? I find it extremely enjoyable to mingle with some of the greatest characters in the game, both character- and powerwise. Korgan is an excellent fighter (lots of HP), Viconia is an awesome cleric (65% mag res) and has the best romance, Edwin easily outpowers all those sorry excuses for good mages (+3 spell/level) and the guy from ToB takes the first price in the competition of being ridiculously strong (awesome stats, deathbringer assault) and yet interesting.

As long as you keep your reputation around 10, you'll get decent shop prices, everyone stays happy and no one will hunt you. You can still do the "good quests" as long as they have a nice reward and still do it the "bad" way, and if your reputation would rise from it, there's really nothing wrong with unleashing your bhaalspawn powers on someone annoying.

Although they surely have focused more on creating the game for good-aligned characters, they have putten some work into the bad side as well. :)

[edit add-on] Ah, and yes, don't forget that the rewards in hell is much better when picking the evil side. :)
