The dreaded energy drain

Post by Thane of Cawdor »

I keep on getting level drained by various undead spooks, and having to trek back to a temple to get it sorted. Jaheria's god still hasn't seen fit to give her a lesser restoration spell, and I'm buggered if I'm going to let that little fanny Aerie tag along with me again.

Anyone got any clever ideas about how I could either get some item or spell to restore lost levels?

Also, can you still gain experience when you are level drained? (ie experience on top of your original, which will then be added when you get restored).

Thanks,

Thane of Cawdor

Oh yes, I forgot to say, my party (me, Jaheria and Nalia) and level 10-12 and we're messing with the cult of the unseeing eye on the second chapter, and this is my second time through the game.

Druids don't get the Restoration Spells, only Clerics do.

Why not pay Gaelan and get the Amulet of Power from Aran. Won't resore you but will prevent future level drain. Or pick up a Cleric for your party.

As a druid, Jaheira doesn't get Restoration spells. Sorry. You'll have to take Aerie, Anomen, or Viconia if you want a good solution. Otherwise, without wanting to give too much away, there is a possibility that if you possess Throne of Bhaal, a certain dragon on the third level of somewhere which might or might not be called Watcher's Keep could be forcefully persuaded to give up a rather nice katana which casts Lesser Restoration once per day, and there is a chance that it may even be possible to upgrade this weapon to cast Greater Restoration.

Otherwise, if you don't have ToB, or Watcher's Keep is too hard for you (either is very possible), your only option is protection. From your description, it looks like you are not playing an evil party. When you pay Gaelan Bayle, an Amulet of great Power will be yours, which will give any non-fighter or thief permanent immunity to level drain. The upgraded Mace of Disruption does the same.

After all that waffle, the obvious solution has just jumped into my field of vision. The 4th level spell "Negative Plane Protection" will protect you from level drain, and Jaheira will most definitely have it. There you go. Much better.

Aww noooo. I wanted to go through this time with just the three of us, but I can see myself ditching jaheria unless she shapes up.

I'll check out other clerics I think. I'm saving ToB for once I've finished this again. Must say, it's even better the second time through, I'm finding much much more.....

Thanks,

The Thane.

Buy a load of restoration scrolls from a temple...?

LOL, Jammer beat me to it.

IIRC, you don not gain XP whilst level drained (your XP is overwritten with "LEVEL DRAINED").

Well, that's a problem with most of the characters really. Jaheria is the only character that I really like, maybe because I associate fantasy settings with european accents and, without being offensive to my yankee brethren, the american accents feel a bit too much like 1950's hollywood camelot films.

Also: "Nature, take the life she gave" is kind of cool, where as "Faster than tikkita fast paws" is highly annoying.

Incidentally, are there any other decent mage/clerics in the game?

High regards,

Thane of Cawdor

You can buy restoration scrolls - ahhhh. I may be a top door bashing skull crushing warrior, who may one day be King of Caledonia, but I'm none to clever at times.

That looks like the solution, plus negative plane protection.

Thanks all.

Why not check out the NPC section on this site? All NPCs are good, actually.

NPC section of the site. Yes. Thanks for the tip.

All NPCs are good. No. Not ones that used to have wings and moan about it all the time. Or mad people with pet rats and bald heads.

You may, or may not, like their personalities but you you can hardly deny their effectiveness. In the end, it all comes down to if you know how to use the strenghts of each NPC and at the same time compensate for the weaknesses.

Agreed. Aerie was one of the most useful people in my party first time through. I just can't stand her.

Mix up over what we meant by decent/good I think. All the characters are good at killing/maiming/destroying etc etc but only a few are decent people who you'd want to share a mead with in the copper coronet (not that I'm welcome there anymore since last nights altercation).

Thane.

Man, you've really taken roleplaying into another dimension. :D So who would you like to share your mead with, then? I'd say Jaheira, Valygar, Nalia and Jan (for his funny stories, of course).

You can protect your party members with Protection from Undead scrolls. I usually use these on my mages in areas where I know I'll encounter a lot of Undead. Be aware, however, if you have the entire party protected with these, it can cause some of the nefarious level-drainers to become unkillable, at least until the scrolls effects wear off or are dispelled. This is because there are certain Undead who will not die until they give a final speech. (Makes me want to say, "Shut up and die already!!!" :D )
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Personally i would like to share a mead with Jon Irenicus :D One thinks if he just kicked back with a few more beverages every so often, none of SOA would have happened :D :D

Try imagining a very merry dragon :D - a trolleyed Firkraag with the equivalent of a feeblemind might be slightly easier to vanquish :p

Contrary to popular belief, you do gain experience when level drained. I noticed this when finally killing Bodhi. Imoen was level drained, and I staked Bodhi (about 100,000 quest experience). When I restored Imoen, she instantly leveled up.

Jaheria, because she's all woman. Valgyar, for his stoic, slightly melancholic attitude to life.

Nalia can hang out with us, but she's sort of like the ugly, uncharistmatic person who nobody really listens to but tolerates cause they're rich.

Yeah, I'm sad..... Better than working though.
