Really? I thought that it was a situation where there was always a chance to fail regardless of however many points you put in there.
Hypothetically, there is a perfect number for pickpocketing, but I've never determined what it is. I do know that you can go over it. Some previous posters to this forum found that somewhere in the 220-240 range, it literally laps back to 0. So you don't want to go that high. But before that, your likelihood of being caught drops to next to nothing. I've literally reached a point where I could steal 3 items from the Copper Coronet innkeeper without ever being caught.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Gaelen can be pickpocketed, but you cannot pickpocket the Shadow Thief cellar key from him (he probably has it on a chain around his neck or something--or in other words, it's not in his inventory or his quick slots). In my experience, if I recall correctly, getting caught redhanded does not make him hostile; he says, "Come back later when you can control yourself," and temporarily disappears.
I think the "perfect number" for the Pickpocketing skill is 255. After that, I think it rolls over to 0.

Loving my party at the moment:
PC Half-Drow Barbarian
Valygar
Kivan
Jaheira
Aerie
Nalia (Imoen)
Its not so powerful now as it will be at higher levels I reckon, so everything is a bit challenging (hard spawns), but its really fun and I like the roleplaying of my character and the interactions between the party.

Kivan is a ranger from near High Hedge, I believe. Didn't know of any mods that put Kivan back in BGII though.
Yeah, its a Giberlings3 mod and, from what I gather, a fairly popular one. There's some posts about the mod on these forums a few months ago where people reviewed it fairly well. So if you're a Kivan fan, it might be worthwhile. It's located here.here
