Had to kill Bernard

Post by zeyk »

So my solo assassin is in the back of the Copper Coronet freeing the gladiators and after killing the beastmaster dude I come back to watch Hendak duke it out with Lethinan. All of a sudden i notice I'm getting attacked by none other than Bernard! I've never had this problem before, but needless to say I had to kill the poor bastard. I don't know why he went red on me. I never stole from him and he was blue before I went to the slave areas. Anybody else seen this?

Funny thing, though, is that when I talk to Hendak he still says "I'm letting Bernard run the bar, talk to him if you need anything". Hmm...

You might have accidentally hit him with something somehow...I remember something similar happened to me after wiping out everyone in the back room, except when I came out everybody went red not just Bernard. Reload!

I tried it again, making sure I didn't hit him with anything. Again he went hostile and again I was forced to kill him after chased me out of the Copper Coronet into the slums. Maybe he just doesn't like assassins :-) Anyway, I hope he didn't have anything good to sell cuz he ain't coming back this time.

did you maybe fight the slavers in the open area? Bernard may join in the fight if that happened. that is after he see you attacking his guards.

Bernard has some very nice items to sell after you free Hendak...a great battle axe (stonefire axe +3, does fire damage to kill trolls), a throwing axe that is great if you are good alignment and use axes(azuredge), one of the best long swords you can get early in the game(blade of roses +3), and some high level mage scrolls. If you don't need any of these type of things, don't worry, but if you think you might, figure out some way to keep him friendly...Note that none of these items is necessary for the game, but they are good considering you can get them early.

I don't have any idea why he would be going hostile, the only time he has on me is when I'm trying to steal stuff (he's very hard to steal from).
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

Yup, I killed some of the guards who followed me into the open area. This must have trieggered Bernard's hostility. Since I'm a solo Assassin, I have no need for the axes, so I think Bernard stays dead for now.

Thanks for your comments. Now I know to avoid killing the guards in the open area on my next game.

I've had problems here before too, but with Hendak. I watched him win his fight (he was blue), then he turned red and came at me.

Buggy fight that one.

This time through, Hendak was friendly, but when I came back from a trek outside the city, he had disappeared.

Don't forget: Bernard also has the Throwing Axe of Cheesy Iron Golem Slaying. :D That's Azuredge for the cheesily challenged out there. ;)
