Post by Damn Snakes! »

First post, Love the game, Love the site, this has been a lot of help and almost critical in certain parts of this game... my only previous rpg has been several trips through Dungeon Siege - and this game (bugs and all) is so much better! I love the control of the fighter, sheild and sword, combinations of magic and fighting, (lots of running away) etc...

Well. I have messed up my first game (lost my candle - put in on the Moonstone thingy instead of the other one...) been chased by bats, and rats and large angry trees... I accidentally sold my pants and was well on my way to the Bolen Field quest when I realized I was hanging out in boxers... but I am hooked!

I have little coordination for the jumps, so I usually play a while and then go lay down till my head stops spinning... but I eventually get through... even got through that water jumping thing (lost better part of one morning) I even missed a shadow gate on one of those islands, and you fall and fall and then just dissappear!

Thanks to you all, I have several saves of my game... so that was not a fatal occurance... the athena bashers reminded me of my ex-wife, so I had a lot of fun releasing some age-old bitterness on those lovely, cold wenches...

I don't know if I will be able to finish, my wife is already tired of me yelling at the screen when snakes or scorpions (or those damn ghosts) show up in the middle of a critical battle... (I had a dozen spiders after me in the middle of all those tree things trying to kill me!)

But, I really love this game... and I appreciate all the help this site and these boards have been!

I am off to find a dragon egg... wish me lunch!

When I started and first got to Fargrove and into the Custard Mansion I ran into big problems. I was fighting the big guy with the axe and the game spawned bat, rats, mummies, skeletons ~and~ snakes. What a mess, but I finally did take them all out. Hurray!

And I also like this game an awful lot.

I think I'll pass on the walking around in nothing and not being able to get back and just take your word for it Cheif.. ;)

Damn Snakes! Glad you're enjoying the game, I can sympathize with the yelling and cursing thing though, I'm consistently doing that with this game. Sudden spawning of various creatures during a critical battle REALLY makes me mad. I was doing one of the Sisterhood quests where you have to kill this nasty witch near the Bolen Fields I think, she summoned tons of wolves and one or two beasts, as if the wolves weren't enough! Just when I started whittling down the wolves, killed one beast and gotten half the witch's health down, BANG, respawn, 6 friggin spiders. She summons more wolves, I start killing them down, get the other beast, and almost get HER killed, still fighting off spiders mind you, and BANG, another respawn, Wild Wolves, what is it with this game and wolves, eh? Well needless to say, I killed the witch, all her wolves and beasts, the spiders, and got killed by the 3rd spawn of wild wolves, nice huh?...LOL

Try the Eastern Houses quest where you have to save the Sensei. A random encounter there can get really ervil cause the new monsters will get into a fight with the Senei, making it easier to fail the quest.

Newbies Corner

I hate the snakes, rats, bees and bats that always show up in the middle of a battle the rest I can
deal with. I'm not a newbie but I can offer some advice on how to handle all those wolves or being surrounded by a legion of bad guys and monsters all at once.

The simple best way ( imo ) to handle wolves or any of the larger monsters that attack in bunches is to use the level three Arcane spell 'Fire Burst'. I think that if you try it you will find youself liking this spell and it works either closeup or at a distance and is fairly cheap being a low order spell. The spell fires two bursts at a time and can hit two different monsters at the same time which is very handy and while it is only a level three spell I rate it up there with the Blast and Fire Novas. I have posted info on Fire Burst in other threads on the forum. It can and will save your ass. Try this spell on an incoming pack of wolves or Barrowgrim soldiers or mages.

I would also suggest using the merchant doesn't stock it exploit so that you can load up on this spell. The merchants when they don't stock an item will buy anything from you and then you can buy as many copies of it as you like. I would suggest saving first if you only have one to sell as a precaution and then buy as many as you can afford. You can always reload your save game and try another merchant.

The pests are just part of the game and there is another even cheaper Arcane spell for dealing with them as bows are virtuallly useless against anything in this game. I am not recommending that you do not carry a good bow and put at least 5 points in the Archery Skill as it can still come in handy. The
Arcane spell I usually use against the pests is the level one spell 'Shrieking Star' and carry enough of
them. This spell has distance and can injure more than one monster at a time if they are close
together as the rats, snakes and bees usually are and if you fire rapidly enough the bats will fall like
flies. Good heavens I almost forgot 'Poisonous Cloud' as it will also take out most of those pests but
remember to keep backing up while using it and carry alot of 'Poison Cure' potions. Fight any
poisonous enemy while moving backwards but no faster than you have to as you can always run a
little ways away and start killing them again. It also works in water!

Surrounded are you by a legion of monsters that probably started out as only one or two types and has all of a sudden spawned a whole lot more. There are only two spells that I have used that can save your bacon here and those alre also Arcane spells. The spells are level 6 'Blast Nova' and level 10 'Fire Nova' and what you ideally want to do is to get yourself close to the center of these monsters while pumping health potions and then let the have a taste of a Nova. The two are devastating and look just oh so cool when they ignite. I wonder if you have ever all of a sudden felt lonely standing there by yourself with a big grin on your face when just seconds before you were pretty well on your way to face the Grim Reaper. Watch out for a few enemies that were out of the reach of the spell though if done right they are all nothing but bits blowing in the wind.

Take your Arcane Magic up to at least Level 10. Poisonous Cloud is a Nether Spell so up your abilities a little there because you will also find use for the Nether spell 'Blade of Baal'.

I will take on any monster in the game with the spells I have mentioned and a couple of the more
traditional ones. I would also suggest that you remember to move so that you are not a sitting target
and sometimes just a small move will cause an enemy's attack to miss while your's are hitting.

Good Luck!

One little problem, your spells do effect the Sensei as well in that quest, so if you use an area effect spell, you will quite possibly damage him greatly, or even kill him. That is one of the things that makes that quest difficult. Even with a time crystal, it can possibly be very annoying.

Very Good Point

Hounder, thanks for the response.

Thanks for making a very good point. I am not sure if the spell 'Fire Burst'
has any effect on anything except it's target as we are never in position
to fight to defend a character on our side. You may very well have almost
just as a much chance to strike the Sensei with your sword and I sure as
hell would not try a bow. The problem with a bow is that odds are that
for every five shots you fire ( if you can hit anything ) two out the five may
very well hit the Sensei.

I know that I have killed creatures I have summoned with my sword and
with spells and not on purpose either. I will probably try 'Fire Burst' as it
seems to have a bit of a knockback effect which may give me time to get
in close and use it which may allow the Sensei to attack more freely.

If what you say is true he could just as easily hit me. Oh well, time will tell.

Any ranged-type attack, whether spell or weapon, has a change to miss. If the Sensei gets between you and the target, then your spell/attack will strike him instead.

Every arcane spell that I've seen has an area effect. Be it Fire Burst, Fireball or Magic Missile... they all explode on impact to some degree and will hit anything close to the target. Novas are a no-brainer as they are clearly AE. As I glance through the spells I don't see any that can't potentially hit multiple targets.

The Sensei senses nothing!.......

Hounder, thanks for the response.

I did some testing last night with a Troll by getting real up close and
personal with him and I didn't realized that there was that much splash
effect as it was hitting a couple of goblins accompanying him/she/it.

I wanted to see how safe it would be if I got in front of the Sensei but
to my dismay the Sensei senses nothing any more if I try it. There is
always 'Gripping Vine' as a possibility as I have tried to immoblize the
arrogant twerps they call guards in Fargrove and I could not catch one
of them. I always seemed to catch a bandit. Trolls are fun to catch
and then stand back and watch, anything that slowly chokes or poisons
them will work but you might have to cast the vine again as they are
fairly resistant to most attacks except brute force or a goblin harpoon in
the back.
