Deathlord or Crusader?

Post by benstrik »

I finished the first steps for both the priests and the fighters guilds and now I have to choose which last step to complete - the Deathlord or the Crusader.

My dilemma is that I just got the Barbtongue Runeblade and it's my highest damaging weapon so far, but it's a heavy weapon. I like dual wielding and my original thought was to go Deathlord to get dual wield medium weapons, but I'm not sure that it'll be worth it. Is dual wield medium weapons a huge upgrade from dual wield light weapons? most weapons I use are either heavy or light, haven't found many good medium weapons so far.

Also, Crusaders get crushing blow and Deathlords get Inflict Wounds. I never use blunt weapons; does crush work with swords as well? (Contrary to what the description says) Any thoughts on which way to go?

Tough call. Really not a huge difference between them. Medium dual weapons is a complete bust. The only medium weapon you can carry in your off hand is rusted axe :( . Crushing blow does work with any heavy weapon including swords. I haven't played as a Crusader but I played as Lord which also gets crushing blow. There is no animation with crushing blow but once you get a few points in it you'll find most creatures will just stand there while you beat on them due to the stun effect. I'm just getting started as a death lord. Inflict wounds works and causes creatures to continue to take damage after your strike. Another factor you might consider is that Crusader gets a celestial bonus. If you want to get good use of the celestial offensive spells (lightning and solar ray) then you might want the celestial bonus. If the bottom line is which is more powerful then I would have to say a Crusader with a bunch of celestial lightning is the most powerful. Most of the mobs you face will be dead before they even get near you. Where as death lord might be the stronger melee fighter, if that’s what you like, because of the extra damage from inflict wounds. Anyhow just my 2 cents I'm sure some will disagree. D

I assume by first step you mean "second tier" class. If that's not the case then I would go with Fighter/Samurai so you get both dual wield and inflict wounds and you can still get Crusader through your Adept path. However if you have already completed Fighter/Marauder then I would go Adept/Paladin/Crusader anyway.

I pretty much agree with what ferncliff said and if med. dual wield is busted then go with crushing blow and bonus to clestial magic.

Not sure what you meant Golden Efreeti. I am Fighter/Adept/Paladin/Marauder now and have done both starting quests for Crusader and Deathlord. Sounds like I'll just go Crusader since my only reason for wanting Deathlord was the medium dual wield. I just had a feeling that there weren't any medium dual wield weapons so I figured I'd ask here.

I like the Celestial attacks so Crusader works for me.

At a glance your post read like you had only completed the first step, which would make you a Fighter/Adept. In that case I made a recomendation. However you have actually completed the second step or tier, so Samurai is not an option (sucks, cause dual wield + inflict wounds rocks for that early in the game). Thats why I made 2 suggestions. :D

I agree with golden. That is exactly my build and I love it. A samurai/crusader has dual wield, inflict wounds and crushing blow. I'll take my kama of the void over a rusted axe any day. ;)

As for the large weapons, don't worry about not being able to dual wield the barbtongue runeblade. You'll find much better large swords later on that you can wield in one hand.

I've found several but one place I know with 100% certainty is the level 9 chest next to Voraatus in the Tomb of Souls. If you open it enough you will pretty much get your choice of Kama of the Void, Necrotic Battlebow, Scepter of Evil, Ice, or Fire and Katana of the sun (8-22 dmg- 1hand sword) just to name a few possibilities.

I got mine from one of the level 8 chests in Tomb of Souls. I think it was from the room with the Fiend of Ghazbu. I've also got all the pieces of Guilded armor. I know Deathlord has a couple more points of armor but it didn't fit the look I wanted for my Crusader.

I found a Katana of the Sun in the same chest in which I eventually found the kama. I reloaded because I had no use for a medium weapon - needed a heavy weapon in my primary hand to make use of Crushing Blow.

I am on the verge of finishing Tomb and getting the Blade of Death which I hope can be wielded in one hand. I'm currently using a Sapphire Greatsword but swap to the insane damage of a Diamond Light Greatsword when fighting undead.

Currently on my wishlist - Helm of the Lords, no-Dachi of Night, Demonblades of Baal and Charrus. If anyone remembers where they have found any of these, please let me know.

What do you mean by Guilded armor? Also, Crusaders and Deathlords both get heavy armor, so what does it mean when you say Deathlord has a couple more point of armor but doesn't fit your look?

There is a set of armor called Deathlord's (not to be confused with the Deathlord class). It consists of several pieces like the Deathlord's Plate, Deathlord's boots etc. You don't have to be a Deathlord to wear it. Any build with access to heavy armor can do that.

The Deathlord pieces seem to have the highest armor rating and are followed by the Guilded set of armor with pieces called Guilded Mail, Guilded gloves etc. The Deathlord armor is dark and has an 'evil' skull motif so it tends to make a character look nasty rather than like a noble crusader. That's why I prefer outfitting my character in the shiny, golden Guilded set even though the pieces have slightly lower armor ratings in comparison to the Deathlord set.

As a side note - while these sets have the highest armor ratings, neither of them seem to provide bonuses to things like strike/parry and so people may prefer to use other kinds of armor. A huge parry score could possibly more than compensate for a lower armor rating.

Hey warbride
Good luck finding Helm of the Lords, no-Dachi of Night, Demonblades of Baal and Charrus. I sent a long time looking for all of those and have never found them. Some have reported finding one of the demon blades and I've seen a few screen shots with characters holding a demonblade but as far as the others, no reports. Let us know if you find some of that good stuff. D

I've just found that the Blade of Death can't be dual wielded. I'm guessing the same might be the case for the demonblades so I'm not going to go crazy trying to find them. My kama of the void does too much damage for me to consider giving up my secondary weapon for a larger primary weapon. I think I read a post somewhere about the no-dachi being wielded in one hand so that's the last weapon upgrade I'll be aiming for.

Oh, I'm also looking for a couple trinkets - Bracelet of Power and the Headhunter Charm. My big urgoth would love the damage bonus from that bracelet. :)

The bracelet of power is a sisterhood guild quest item so I think it can't be found. You can find the ring of blood +5% damage in a chest under water in lost lake. The chest I'm thinking about is in the southeast corner of lost lake just northwest of the cove that you'll see if you look at a map. The chest is level 8 and it gives out a lot of nice ring options. The no-dachi of winter can be found in the chest in the southwestern corner of the maze of Iry. Maybe with luck the no-dachi of night will pop out of there. D

I think the Demonblades can be duel wielded. I found this post in another thread.

Ahh I thought I saw a chest underwater (or shadow), but between it being night at the time, and those killer fish on me when swimming I just passed it up, will go back now

There are 2 chests in Lost Lake. One I mentioned and one is due north of the west side of the river flowing from arindale. D
