Cloakwood Mines *POSSIBLE SPOILER*
I have a question regarding the second level of the cloakwood mines. Ill put this in black even though its not too much of a spoiler. In the second level, somwhere around a corner, there is a very powerful lightning bolt trap. Unfortunately, I have no thief in my party. So i was wondering if you have any clever ideas in avoiding this trap. I've tried running past it with boots of speed, etc. etc., but to no avail. I just really don't want to leave and get a thief/revive a dead character.
Any help is appreciated.

I believe there is a secret corridor on the right side of the level. Look for a secret door there if possible. You may be lucky in finding it... or go back and hire someone like Coran to find it or disarm that trap.
Alternatively a Mirror Imaged character may avoid the damage, just don't move the character so that the lightning doesn't follow you.

You took the word out of my mouth, with the exception that I'd recommend that you do move your character out of the lightning bolt's way.
Anyway, you're not supposed to stroll right in there, as there's a ton of archers and a mage who'll wipe your party faster than you say abidalzim. (I usually disarm the trap and sends some fireball's up their asses, though. ^^) There's a hidden passage if you follow the right corridor. It's guarded by some ghasts or whatever they're called. There you can aviod the traps and the whole encounter.
Otherwise, Coran is close by (Cloakwood forest), and he's one of the most worthy character in the game, with his fighter/thief class and 20 dextierity. Really good if you want some thieving skills but don't want to loose out on a fighter.

If you move your character won't the lightning bolt just follow you up the corridor to where you party stands (or at least bounce off the corridor 10 times pulverizing your character)? That's why I didn't recommend moving, let it hit you once, enter the main room and THEN run.
You'll miss out on good XP and treasure if you just skip the encounter.

Um, you stated that you shouldn't move out of the lightning bolt's way, and each time you get struck there's a chance that it's the real you that get's to take the hit. If you just stand there you usually get hit a lot of times... So moving out after it hits you once have always proven to be the best alternative for me.
Anyway, I don't remember it being any significant loss in either xp or eqiupment. There's not even a +2 weapon there, or another almost good item? But well - who can resist bashing some meanies just 'cause they stand in your way? ^^

Sorry if I wasn't clear. From what I remember of that corridor and the trap, the trap is just after a right-angle corridor. Either the lightning bolt goes straight down a corridor into a room, or if you move as the trap is springing in the other direction then the bolt bounces off the walls lots of times due to the way the corridor faces and the direction of the lightning bolt.
So you could get possibly hit once or you could get the lightning bolt passing you 10 times - instant death . Hope that cleared it up a bit. Hard for me to explain.
I think some of the enemies in the room carry Ice Arrows and the mage may have some good scrolls.
you could also be wearing the boots of grounding. that way if you do get hit it is only 50% damage. or cast some kind of summon spell (or wand located in a cave 1 map area east of the carnival) and let the beasties spring the trap.
Summons cant start the trap. At least not in the patched game. I'd advise for potion of absorption and prot. from electricity. Or, of course, running around by the secret doors.

Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.
