WOW, I have tried about 10 more times, using everything I could muster, and I managed to kill him once, but everybody died except my cleric, and I didn't have enough resurrects/raise deads to bring everybody back without resting, and you have to rush to the portal :(

I'm pretty sure I can do it now though, I'm just going to memorise a few more offensive spells and reviving spells with my cleric, then I'll take another go at it, but that won't be for a few days :(

Thanks for the help guys :)

Little late i know. But somehow portal doesn't close when you sleep. But if you spent way too long time casting spells or just something like that portal will close. I just tend to rest after battle with dragon.

Guardian and Yuan-ti

<Threads merged>

So I'm at the Crossroads, and I cannot, really truly cannot seem to beat either the yuan-ti's or the guardian...so I'm a little stuck. I keep having to kill my paladin off before entering the yuan-ti temple with the initiate robes on, and then I end up getting attacked anyway. The guardian is too resistant to attacks and spells even with a lessen resistance spell cast...so I don't know what to do. Any ideas? Cause I'm fresh out...
I imagine therefore I belong and am free~

What does your party consist of and what level are they?

The Guardian is tough, but beatable. there are a number of tricks you can use, but I recently managed to take him down with my solo character (a cleric of mask with a few wizard, rogue and fighter levels). Before you even get to the Guardian though, you'll have to kill off the Yaun-Ti. I'd be happy to suggest some tactics to help if you let me know what you're playing.

As a general rule though, try and have all your characters equiped with a decent missile weapon. Have your main combat character(s) at the front so must enemies attack him. Hold your characters back and fire off a round of missiles at whatever is apporaching you, then have your spell casters use spells like Hold Person (this works on Yaun-Ti doesn't it?), Emotion: Fear, Horror and Greater Command to stop a few in their tracks. Once some are disabled CONCENTRATE ON THE ONES THAT ARE STILL ACTIVE. you can finish off the disabled/distracted ones at leisure, get rid of those still an active threat to you.

As for the Guardian, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere works wonders in this battle :) I had my weakest char summon him (the rogue I believe) so that the dragon attacked her first. Encased her in a Sphere, and had all the others attack him from a safe distance... (I belive only magical weapons have a chance to scratch him).

After reading a really really old thread about the guardian, I came up with a different tactic than I've used before.

Arrows of piercing (found about 100 before the guardian) + druid casting call lightning/static whatever several times + +3 or more melee weapons in the hand of someone with mirror image or huge armor class (I had 44 AC + improved invisible and stone skin) = quick guardian death with not much cheese.

Any of those weapon combinations work well without the others, using them all is just for speed.

I have been trying for weeks, I'm truly fed up with this dragon.

Do I need to kill the dragon to move on in this game? Can I just walk on and come back later when I'm leveled up more and have bigger better weapons?

I had trouble with that dragon, too.

Though it will take longer, you can do the same as I did, empty the yuan-ti complex and report back to Kuldahar. The arch-druid will be disappointed and you will get less quest XP, but the story will progress.

I defeated the dragon later on, getting that XP and closing the portal at the same time.

If you have the recommended Pal 2 - Sorc X (PC 4 in the powergaming guide) in your party, this battle shouldn't cause that many problems!

With 8 MI available and immunity to fear the Guardian can't harm her in any way!

Not sure but AFAIR the guardian has some sort of acid cloud, but being aasimar this shouldn't also be that big problem (additional use prot. acid if needed)

Send her to melee (keep all other PCs on a distance) and cast cone of cold or any electrical damage spells on the guardian, but always keep your MI up!

The rest of the party can't help much in this fight as most will be affected by fear if they get to close...

...but you can use the throwing axe with electrical damage from some distance or any other ranged attack causing cold or electrical damage!

You can also try to use summons, but they will just help the sorc to keep up MI for some more rounds, but won't do any damage to the guardian!

...without the pal 2 - sorc X this could be quite a tought battle ;)

You can also go long-range with Mordenkainen's Sword (or two, if you can). Just have a fear-protected, acid-protected tank and some summons to keep it occupied - replacement of summons will be necessary, and probably some healing for the tank.

You can also try to hit it with Lower Resistance then spells causing saving throw penalties (Malison, Prayer, Recitation) and Disintegrate.

So I levelled up a bit more and went back to defeat this dragon.

I KICKED ITS ASS!

Then the portal closed and trapped me in the jungle...............

I felt like smashing my laptop to bits.

There's a delay before that happens and an autosave after killing the Guardian so you shouldn't have too much trouble. The only problem I had was resurrecting dead characters in time, if you don't have enough, pick up as much equipment dropped as poss. and run for the portal.

Here is my advice to you...

When I first encountered the dragon, I was "gone in 60 seconds"...literally!
Did not know what hit me, gone with the wind, whichever appeals more to you.
The second time, I lasted more than 60 seconds but still super heavy losses.
Third time, I reached to "Badly wounded" situation for the dragon.

I think I underestimated the dragon's power, for a minute there, hey sport ..!!?!?

But I did not give-in...

I took another approach to this batlle and here is exactly what I did:
Before placing the last pillar on the spot I, once again, rested, I took every one OUT of that circle of stones where the dragon appears.
I then buffed up my party real bad, because most of the time they all panic and you end up with one dude fighting and the rest fleeing in terror.
I summoned my mighty and worthy undead, 6 of them to be precise! Now, I cast invisibilty on my most "useless" character for this battle and sent
him to place the pillar. Afterwards I casted 3 "Skull Traps" on the path out of the circle of stones. Now, every one is waiting for it to happen.
I place the pillar, screen shakes, lightning fires..etc... Dragon appears, ignores the character beside him (he is invisible, remember) and rushes out
to attack me. BHAM! About 100 hit points gone without breaking a sweat (skull traps).
Now, the undead kick in. They lasted FAR LESS than I expected, but still, did some nice damage on the dragon. Then I sent in the infantry
I had slashing & crushing weapons. Two of them were in fact + 4 weapons I got from Conlan. I casted about every offensive speel I had
One spell that surprised me was the Cleric "Symbol of stunning" which actually stunned the dragon for about 7 seconds.
Eventually the battle was over, I won finally...! Much healing was needed but you do not need worry about that since the game automatically
makes you rest and heal thyself.

Good luck :-)

Good job - I haven't seen the Invisibility + Skull Trap combo mentioned here before, but now that you mention it...

Would work very well with the Glyphs of Warding (Cleric lvl 3 spell doing electrical damage) also - maybe with Delayed Blast Fireball (if you have a good sorceror), but the Guardian has pretty good fire resistance. I think "sitting" spells might bypass spell resistance, just as effects like Call Lightning and Static Charge do - not entirely sure, as my monk always seems to resist the Skull Traps I cast at my front line. Elementals might be tougher than undead as they have damage resistances, although I'm pretty sure they can be affected by Fear.

You used Improved Invisibility, I presume? Regular invisibility disappears when you perform an action other than walking.

Exaltion (lvl 3 cleric spell) and Impervious Sanctity of Mind (lvl 7 cleric) are of some use if you need another character or two to be able to act freely against the Guardian. Very useful for a cleric or another spellbomber.

Last time I beat the Guardian I had to resort to a combination of strategies - the Disintegrate strategy didn't work, and I ended up hammering away with lightning and all the MM that two sorcerors and a wizard could use. I'm not sure I landed more than a couple blows in melee during the entire fight.

Regarding the invisibilty spell, it was a regular invisibility spell. Once I placed the pillar, I had no other use for that character, so he just stood there.
Maybe I was lucky with this strategy but it worked for me.

Cheers :)

Actually, your strategy is gold. You could absolutely abuse it. :D

There is really only one problem with fighting the guardian, aside from the fact that it is big and tough and magic-resistant. It is the fear effects that destroy a party.

You could conceivably cast literally dozens of Skull Traps and Glyphs of Warding on the steps after putting one character (with Improved Invisibility capability) in position, then back off the rest of the party a good distance and summon elemental or undead to the limit in front of the party at the edge of where the fear effect would reach. The Guardian could take a big lot of damage from running through about a dozen each of Skull Traps and Glyphs then going through a pack of elementals before starting in on your party...
