Candle of Invocation

Post by Math Mannaman »

Hopefully someon ecan help me with this.

Here is a description:

If burned by preist of same alighnment, the candle temporarily increases the priests level of XP by two, enabling additional spells to be cast. He can even cast spells normally unavailable, as if a higher level, but only so long as the candle continues to burn.

--------------
The description doesnt say how the spells are obtained, or anyother conditions...

Does this mean that if the PC burns this candle, he can fire of any spell he wants with the "extra" spell slots?

Or do you have to memorize the spells while burning the candle? (like innssence of meditation)

Or thirdly, must the candle be burning from memorazation all the way till the spell is cast?

Hmm, I think with this, I personally would do it so the candle burns for 24 hours. That way, you need 8 hours for rest, a set time for memorizing the spells, and then whatever time after that, you can then use them. If you use it up really quick, you may have enough time for 2 uses. If not, it's a one use item. I would make it they have to burn the candle from sleeping the night before, all the way through though.

It says the candle lasts for 4 hours in the DMG...

i did some digging around and found a description that says you use it while memorizeing spells, and tthen you can put it out. If you learn spells higher than your natural level, then the candle must stay lit until you cast it...

makes some sense...

I agree.

Plus, you don't study while sleeping. The full night rest is just for being alert. A priest studies at a certain time of day, mostly morning.

So, you go to sleep... wake up fresh, light the candle and pray/study.
When you cast the spells, light the candle before you do (move action) to have acces to the spell.

Your caster level increases by 2, so more spells and perhaps even a new spell level.
Guinness is good for you.
Gives you strength.
