I decided to play through again, mainly because I got intrigued by the hawkeye skill which you get as a Ranger Lord. It causes a certain percentage of your bow and arrow shots to be instantly lethal.
Has anyone played with this skill ? I had supposed that you could boost it up so that 3 or 4 percent of your shots would be lethal, if not more. If the best you can do is one out of a thousand, then it's not worth it.
Anybody know ?
Second, I wanted to get this skill first, then play through the entire main sequence; particularly the trial of the elders. I've completed the second tier rogues quest and am a hunter, but can't continue because I can't get into the Forbidden Lands.
As far as I can tell you can't get the quest that causes Vartugg to let you in until after the Fargrove lockdown, and you can't end the Fargrove lockdown without seeing Emmindor, which you can't do without completing Ulm Castle and the Trial of Elders.
Have I got this right, or is there a way ?
This leaves me with the option of climbing over the gates or the mountains to get into the Forbidden Lands (and back out). I haven't been able to climb over any mountains so far, and I would appreciate any remarks on techniques that might help, and attributes/skills it might be helpful to raise.
Any help appreciated

Need some comments -- hawkeye, climbing mountains
It worked
And it all worked. Moon Bridge into the Vale of Ruin and killed the boss there, back to Arindale. A glitch there because you have to report it to the Guild of Mystery to receive the promotion, and I don't know of a place west of Fargrove. So I had to climb over the mountains ... to my surprise that was easy, too. I wonder if strength is a factor. There is a place south of Fargrove where I went over on practically the first try and came to the South road.
On to Skuldoon, visited Vartugg's place, got the Hunter Lord icon lit and acquired the hawkeye skill. Over the fence into The forbidden lands, up to that Moon Gate. back to Arindale.
Pumped the hawkeye up to level eight, all the points I had -- going to 9 will cost almost a million points -- and went hunting for a fire drake.
After a bad start, followed the usual method, ran around until one got stuck, then started pumping arrows into him. Killed him in the usual way, couple of hundred hits, anyway.
A disappointment there. Whatever the probability of a kill is, the hawkeye will just be an unexpected bonus, not a serious weapon. I'm not sure I care though.
I will do the Eastern House quests, and an additional quest for the Sisterhood. Then I will have all the possible classes, and have completed all quests outside the main quest. We'll see if I want to play further.
I recommend that as a challenge to those who have finished the game, and want to play some more, but don't want to just follow the same old line through. Can you get your two first tier classes, two second tier classes, and your favorite third tier class, and complete all related quests without starting Ulm Castle or the Trial of the Elders ?
I also will ask: Is anybody reading this? From the level of activity in this forum, it looks to me as if this game is stone cold dead, before the 1.4 patch even comes out. Not much point in writing things up if nobody cares.
