does anyone have any tips about character creation and how the stat points should be used?
or can anyone share some info about their favorite/most effective clan members and how they usually distribute their stats at the beginning of the game...

My favorite clan is Tremere,but Toreador is very nice too.
It would be smart if you'd put all the points from one column into one skill.That way you will save a bit of experience later on.A thing that you have to watch is that some skill(persuasion for example)won`t rise to astrominal amounts like 7 or 8.Keep it balanced.Just take the skills you like:unarmed/melee/gun?Persuasion/seduction/intimidade?Don`t know what to suggest,depends too much on the chatecter clan and your own preferences.Answer the questions to get the clan that should fit you.Then rearrange all the stats into one.
I don`t have the game installed right now,and so i don`t remember how exacedly i distributed my skill points,but hopefully some other members will make that up,aswell as posting new ideas.
