I bet this quesstion hsve been asked thousand times but... what character is cool to play? I have already completed the game with ranger, undead hunter. I was thinking maybe assassin but all the thieves are weak like hell. Swashbuckler was good the only disadvantage is he cannot backstab. But who cares about that! Most of times there are like 6 guys standing there, u sneak backstab one of them, 30 damage and he is not dead only badly injured. All the onther beat the crap out o u with poison arrows and axes be4 u even have time to get the hell out so... what the **** is actually cool wih thief???
BTW i found Monk to be DAMN powerfull. but he looks sick.

My main character is generally a dual fighter/thief. You can go Assassin/fighter, but the biggest advantage of an assassin (higher backstabbing) comes at the higher levels. Kensai/Thief is pretty strong, especially with Use Any Item. Wizard Slayer/Thief can be even better wielding the right items (100% magic resistance).
I'd have to agree, thieves are pretty weak to use backstabbing. But a fighter/thief can backstab the mage while the rest of the party charges into the battle.
The key to a big backstabber is having others there (backstabbing or not). When I use multiple custom characters, 2 or 3 are multi/dual thieves. One other is a ranger who'll use the best studded leather I can find.
The rest of the time I'll use spells like pixie dust to get the entire party rigged perfectly before a battle.
Oh yeah, last tip for a thief - get Jaheira's harper pin! Nondetection works against True Sight, so you can make a mage waste all his true sight spells before the battle begins.

The assassin is one of my favorite classes. I play either a halfling for the thieving bonuses, or an elf for the THACO bonus with sword and bow. An assassin is not a frontline fighter. He is a sniper, and an outstanding backstabber. In my most recent game, my assassin was killing Fire Giants in a single hit (with sometimes over 200 points backstab damage).
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

Yeah he's a sniper but a very bad one. Archer is a sniper. U can only give one slot to each weapon category so when he has a SHORT BOW with just +1 mastery for it he sucks. My previous game when i was ranger i had all the best armor and katanas and crom fayer and all that crap i had no prob even beating dragons. I just charged with all my men the Firkraag and i killed him pretty fast. Same with that dragon that i killed in Suldanesselar. So i beated game pretty damn fast.
