too busy praying, I guess.
It bothered me too, since Keldorn before he became a paladin should have started out as a wandering knight, like anomen was a fighter cleric, until his deeds were worthy enough to get him his paladinhood.
but it kinda makes sense if keldorn started out as a simple cleric, until his devotion to torm gave him the option of paladinhood, thus he was limited by cleric skillsets.

Paladins start out as squires. Not clerics or fighters.
Although I can see the strangeness of a 20th (or more) level paladin (or ranger) - a master of combat - not being better using his preffered weapon than a 3th level fighter getting mastery...
But then again, then what's the glory of being a pure fighter?
Yet, it would be nice if paladins and rangers could get mastery after, say 10th level or so.
And then eventually becoming a grand master at 20th or 25th or whatever.

2 things:
Gameplay: paladins can do things fighter's can't, like lay on hands, immunity to disease, protection from evil. Its a trade off for weapon mastery (and a good one I believe - the benefits of grand mastery are not much better than specialisation).
Roleplay: a paladin is warrior of his/her god - piety before prowess. If you want martial prowess, be a fighter.

According to the Player Handbook for D&D, nobody becomes a paladin out of choice, even if he aspires to above all else. Here is the transcript from the book:It bothered me too, since Keldorn before he became a paladin should have started out as a wandering knight, like anomen was a fighter cleric, until his deeds were worthy enough to get him his paladinhood.

"Background: No one ever chooses to be a paladin. Becoming a paladin is answering a call, accepting one's destiny. No one, no matter how diligent, can become a paladin through practice. The nature is either within one or not, and it is not possible to gain the paladin's nature by any act of will. [...]
Most paladins answer the call and begin training as adolescents. Typically, they become squires or assistants to experienced paladins, train for years, and finally set off on their own to further the causes of good and law. Other paladins, however, find their calling only later in life, after having pursued some other career."

That's a BG engine limitation. In PnP, you can dual to Paladin.Originally posted by KillerKid:
