Hiya, I know similar questions have been asked before with regards to profficiencies but I couldn't find the answers to what I wanted.
If I take a ranger and then dual him to a cleric when he regains his ranger abilities will he be able to wield weapons denied by the cleric ethos. I know Kensai mages can use swords once they get to the required level, is it any different?
Could I say create a Archer/Cleric using short bows? Or a Stalker/Cleric backstabbing with a katana? Oh, and just quickly, what armor could they wear? I'm assuming that would stay as studded leather.
A Ranger dualled to a Cleric may only use weapons that are useable by Clerics. This means no edged weapons (like swords) or bows and arrows. Try the Flail of Ages combined with the Defender of Easthaven or Crom Faeyr, and you shouldn't have any complaints.
The unpatched version of Shadows of Amn allows a Stalker to dual to a Cleric, but one of the patches (or Throne of Bhaal) removes that option. So you probably shouldn't plan on playing a Stalker dualled to a Cleric. If I'm not mistaken, Archers have never been able to dual to a Cleric in the Baldur's Gate series, which is no big loss since they would only be able to use slings, anyway.
You might consider playing a multi-class Cleric/Ranger. I once posted a comparison between a Berserker dualled to a Cleric and a multi-class Fighter/Cleric which, allowing for some minor differences, will show you some of the pros and cons.
They cannot use any weapons not allowed by the cleric ethos. If your ranger is restricted in its armor use (such as a stalker), you might not be able to use the heavier armours, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
I've got ToB installed and patched and I couldn't dual from either Archer or Stalker.
I did just dual from Cleric to Ranger, but after regaining my clerical abilities (using Shadow Keeper) I lost the proficiency points I'd put in Katana and Scimitar.
I think the armor restrictions would apply, as even non-kitted rangers lose their ability to hide in shadows in heavy armour.
To add to the above, let me explain the difference between cleric's "can't use" and mage's "can't use".
Cleric can't use weapons like edged and bows, because of their ethos. So, even if they know how to use them, being cleric prohibited them from using those weapons.
While mages can't use those weapons because they don't know how to. Therefore, once they learnt how to use those weapons, they can use them because nothing prevent them to do so.

I thought this might be the case. Cheers for clearing it up.
How come though that Fighters can become Mages and wield weapons that warriors can use and mages can't, such as katanas, but Clerics can't? (Minerva got there! )
Blooming devout Clerics!!!
And when fighter cleric types get promoted to Paladins (know this doesn't actually happen but you get my drift) they're suddenly allowed to use sharp weapons again!?
Not that I'm bitter or anything. Just had visions of a buffed up super soldier waiting in the shadows to stab his enermies down. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

Fighter dualed to mage gets same restrictions as F/M multiclass ie can use all fighter stuff except cannot cast in armor. Ranger/Clerics multiclass are restricted to cleric proficiencies therefor the ranger dualed to cleric cannot use all weapons.
