Post by NCT »

That question popped up during a pow-wow with RPGers, last weekend. So,let's see who are the true "Paladins",here. No cheating includes:char/item import, hint books, downloads and all the rest. Here goes!

When I started playing BG2 I finished it without any cheating at all. I think every wise player did the same. My current level of cheating is level 50 rules patched by mine (extended thac0 and saving throws tables - the values improves to better limits with their natural speed and a weapon proficiency table - fighter/anything mixed clasess can have 5+ for all allowed weapons).

Tricky question this.....I think it all depends on how you define "cheating"....
Importing characters and Items....getting stuck somewhere and reading a hint book or a walkthrough....or recieving advice from someone else.....killing dragons with cloudkill....or taking advantage of some silly bug in the game.......in the end it all comes down to what you think...what you consider cheating......

First time through my Jaheira romance "locked up"...(I'm sure I'm not alone with that problem Image).....so I used the Console to set things straight again.....second time through I myself consider to have completed the game without cheating..........
So I might have stood at a safe distance and thrown the "Azuredge" at the Adamite Golems when they can't go through the doors....but I don't consider that cheating......maybe some people do... Image

Well done.A question,however:Why,in blazes,are you cheating now?Isn't there a contradiction of wisdom,somewhere?

Your honesty does you credit. As for throwing the "Azuredge" and all that, what better strategy is there?

Well my first time through the game I used my imported char form BG1....but I had gone through BG1 with him 6 times..and the first time through BG2 if I run into something I couldn't figure out I skipped it. No romance, No stronghold ,No Twisted Ruin .

No cheats, no hints, no walkthroughs. Hey, I couldn't even find the boots of speed the first time through.
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time

@NCT: Even a wise player may find irritating that he gets no XP through ch. 6 and 7 (XP cap). Then he can find out that the XP cap remover does not help (only mages get some additional spells, the others get only 1-3 HP for their efforts). Finally, he can find out that level 50 rules are preserving the situation (you will need level 40 or so to get some reward for your effort - the teambg.com patch is referred here). Thus, the wise player can try to fix all sources of irritation and still remain wise.

NCT, many situations in this game are a bit different, the AI is notoriously dumb in BG II ('specially the pathfinding.)

It is one thing to ambush someone in a valley, it is another to ambush someone and proceed to kill them while they spend 10 minutes getting scratched to death as they run stupidly at a door.

Isn't neccessarily cheating with golems, who are supposed to be stupid, but door bugs with mind flayers I consider cheating cause, well, even my cat would be smart enough not to stand around in a seething fireball.

ive been through bg2 twice without cheating. ive started about five other 'non legit' games but havent finished any. i find that cheating makes the game really boring after awhile.
