But I already talked to him and didn't get the key! Now when I go talk to him he just asks me if I have got the "rod" yet. But I don't know how to get the rod without the key!

When you talk to Gaal..you need to ask him how you will get to the lower levels..then he will give you a key. You don't get down via the pit...thats for later after getting half the rod
