Rescueing Imoen
So, basically BGII is Rescueing Imoen, killing Irenicus and some adventuring, right?
-So when does everyone rescue Imoen? Can you do it early when you have the cash for the bribing? Or does everyone adventure and complete quests and just get Imoen at the end of the game?
-Is killing/defeating Irenicus the end of the game? I assume that he's being held with Imoen and therefore rescueing her results in a confrontation with him.

Why don't you play it and find out?
VAGUE SPOILERS:
BGII: SOA has a very complex storyline, not a linear person-hunt. On your first question, the answer is that you don't save Imoen right away, nor is she a boss-battle trophy at the end. As for the boss battle, I won't give it away--read the walkthrough on this site if you want--but it's not simple or straightforward, and ultimately is secondary to what you learn about your own character, and the plotline that carries through to BGII: TOB.

That is more or less correct, but not in that order. "Some adventuring" covers a LOT of ground. It's more like, "some adventuring, rescuing Imoen, some more adventuring, and killing Irenicus."

Apparently a lot of people do all of the sidequests before they rescue Imoen; but if I want Imoen to be in my party, I want her to be in my party when I do most of the sidequests. So I do a few sidequests to acquire gold and experience, then I rescue Imoen, and then I do the rest of the sidequests before I finish the game. When I have a party of six I usually pay my 15,000 gold when each party member has about 300,000-400,000 experience points. By the time I have finished rescuing Imoen, they have a lot more experience than that, and depending on how many sidequests I have completed, the game is still only about halfway finished.
Actually, if you do all of the sidequests before rescuing Imoen, the game is in fact completely linear from then on. Putting off a few quests until you've rescued Imoen allows you to deviate from the critical path later in the game, and I find that quite refreshing.

When you rescue Imoen, you'll meet Irenicus, but you won't be able to kill him. In fact, the game is far from over. At the end of the game, there will be a final showdown, but it might not be what you think, and I won't spoil it.
I strongly advise you not to play with a walkthrough. A few spoilers won't hurt, and we could give you some general guidelines (like the advice I gave you about not doing all of the sidequests before you rescue Imoen). Most of my advice to you would follow the clues you're given in the game. For example, after your escape from Irenicus's dungeon, several people will tell you to go to the Copper Coronet. Other people you meet will suggest quests (or offer to pay you to help them) to help you raise money. The critical path is laid out in specific detail, so you can't go wrong with that, but you'll have to make some choices about the sidequests. Some of them are much harder than the others, so you should not attempt them until you've done a few of the easier sidequests. If you want more advice, just ask.

the first time i played i did all the side quests before going after imoen and ended up dumping her from my party anyway as she was so far behind the rest of the party. the second time i played i decided to keep her so i did enough quests to get the cash and be reasonably strong then went after her. its entirely up to you really. as the others say though, the first time through don't use a walkthrough as its so much more fun letting the story develop and finding it out for yourself.
okay, on a related topic, in the second game why can't imoen use the bow? If she can't use the short bow, what good is she really?
I can't be bothered to save her if I get a sub-standard character for it. Its a waste of valuable character slots.

You have to rescue her to complete the game, but you don't have to take her in your party. The first time through I didn't.
Particularly if you have done lots of side-quests before entering Chapter 4, you'll find that she lags behind the rest in terms of XP.
However, she does catch up in ToB and will be using 9th level spells fairly quickly.

imoen can use the short bow cos she has her thief skills that allow that. i always have her equipped with a short bow when i use her. its just the longbow she can't use.
When I tried to equip her with a bow it said she could not hold it, so I had to give her a short sword... Maybe its just my game...
imoen can use a short bow, perhaps you had something in your off hand? also possible that she was using someing like melf's min. meteors - which will preven any weapon from being equipped / unequiped.
---
the question of when for imoen - i try and do enough quests where i'm happy w/ the parties gear and general combat ability - then set out for her, trying to leave a major quest or two open to complete once she rejoins the group.

Do you have Imoen using a buckler shield?
Personally, I prefer to use Imoen, so I try to get her for as many quests as possible and rescue her fairly early on. If I don't plan on having her in my party, I'll take my time.
