New to the Forums, and the game

Post by Madclergy »

Alright well my uncle went out and bought the game but he can't run it so he gave it to me. I installed it and have been playing it in my downtime.

I like it and it has several good points over most RPG's but every site I have read about mid game stuff only mentions bad things (i.e bugs, missing items, skills that don't work, ect.). I was wondering (before I spend precious adv points) if someone could provide me with some tidbits of information on some of the skills that don't necessarily work, plus maybe just some encouragement, it doesn't help to have Game ADD and to see only bad things about the game.

Thanks in advance,
-Me

Welcome to the forum

I recommend you read the sticky post about the bugs people have found. That being said there's a lot that DOES work in this game as evidenced by the activity on this forum and the number of people that have re-played it for the fun it provides.
Things that work: all the attributes work (ie: strength, agility, intellect, etc); athletics work, but don't spend more than you need to backflip (and you'll need to backflip); some spells are missing, but nearly all work; inspect works, disarm trap works; critical strike works, but it's not too functional; parry works, all the weapons and armors (light/medium/heavy)
Things that don't work: medium dual wield, some heraldries (not sure which), potion of air.
There's a better list available in the sticky post at the top of the forum page. Basically, you can make any character you want and you'll be able to enjoy the game with a few minor hiccups. Start it up, get into the game and have fun. Use this site, use the walkthroughs, post your problems if you have any.

They are supposed to release patch 1.4 in the next few weeks and it is reported to make all skills work (info posted today over on dreamcatcher website). There are some missing spells but some of those too are being added (see thread 'need some spells'). Many of the towns are devoid of life and the game in general is unfinished (no word on that). So it short you can wait a few weeks and much/some of the missing content will be added. If you want to get started then avoid putting adv. points in identify, repair, pick locks, parry and scout till after the patch. The patch is also supposed to work with current saves.
The biggest bug in the game is when you enter a room and a door closes behind you and you have to kill all the bad guys before the door reopens, if you save and reload the game 'forgets' to open the door. Don't know if this will be addressed in the patch but even if it is keep multiple saves of your game and nothing worse then losing an hour or 2 of game play will ever happen. For more details on bugs see the sticky thread at the top of the DL forum page.
All in all it's a fun game but it could use more content. I'm sure after the patch it will still need more content. Also multiplayer is a mess but again the patch is coming. D
PS if you just got the game then you might need patch 1.3

Re:

In response to the first post:
I will make sure to check the sticky's, I had been looking over some of the stuff but wasn't sure of a couple things. Thanks for going over some of it. Especailly the Backflip thing, I didn't know if putting points in that was a waste of time or not.

In response to the second post:
Yea we just got the game but I tried to install 1.3 and it says its already current, so I guess that means the game came with it installed. Also the manual says I can change my face but I can't, is this known?

Extra Questions:
1] How soon can i start getting moonstones to activate the moonbridges?
2] Does your game seem to "lag" when you are panning the horizon, is this normal or does my system need a boost?
3] What is the maximum stat you can get? (in both skills and Stats)
4] My character screen (the one that shows skills, classes...ect) has Fighter (what I started off with) and knight (what I am questing for) but there is a space in between them...am I missing a class?

Thanks in Advance,
-Me

Answers to your questions

It is known that you can't change your hair or skin color...yet. One member of this forum, Kel, has changed the face of his character in the little window in the upper left corner of the screen (the portrait), but he hasn't posted how he did it...yet.
Verify that you have V1.3 because it's extremely rare to get a hard copy of the game that way. Most people have to download a couple patches to get 1.3 and there were issues making the patches install. When you start your game and the opening menu comes up (with the scary castle and the slamming menu bars) look in the lower corner of the screen and see that it says '1.3'. If not then look to the forum for help.
1) You can start getting moonstones right away if you want or you can wait until you need to get to the Vale of Ruin. You'll only need to collect 1. It gets reused over and over.
2) If your game is lagging when you pan around then I think you need to try a lower resolution. You can also go into the options menu and reduce your visual radius. Sounds like a computer issue.
3) I know it was posted, but I can't remember the maximum stat numbers. If you're just starting and you're not using a hex editor then you don't have to worry about exceeding any stat limits yet. You don't need to raise your weapon or armor stats above what your currently using, but you'll get advanced tactics above 5 most of the time. Don't worry about that because you'll end up jacking them up to around 10-12 (for fighters). Strength, Dex, Agil are all factors to your damage, strike and parry. Vitality increases the Health of your character allowing you to take more hits. Working those numbers is important to survival. It was posted that if you pump your Vitality above 100 then the monster health also jumps up, so keep your Vitality below 100. Intellect is helpful for mages and it lowers the cost of other stats so don't ignore that. Don't ignore the thieving skills. You'll need to open chests frequently. Put points into Inspect and Disarm trap every now and then. At the end of my game my character attributes were not higher than 85. You'll end up getting plenty of advancement points to play with as you go. Go to the Screenshots thread and look at some of the stats those characters display. You can kind of get a feel for where successful players put points.
4) You're not missing anything. You have the opportunity to join a second guild. Your character can be a fighter/mage or fighter/adept or fighter/thief not to mention Sisterhood classes and Eastern House classes. I believe the slot your talking about is open for that icon if you get it.
Save often and save in a couple slots. Keep an older save available and have fun.

Reply: Well i really would like to know how he changed his face. I was wrong about the 1.3 thing, I apologize, it said that the patch wasn't compatible with the current version (the version that came with the disk) So I guess I will need to go find out how to update it.

Reply: Alright, thats good to hear (see?). Although when I headed towards the island that was on the map, all I ever saw was water..do you know how long it takes to get there and in what general direction I need to travel in the water (you would think with Athletics at 4 I would swim faster :) )

Reply: Will check into it

Reply: first off, Hex Editor? Like the ones they use for Diablo and the such? I didn't even realize they had any of those for this game. As for my stat points, I have got my Str up to a 60 and my Vit up to 55, and I am lvl 10...hey I remembered one of my other question, what is the level cap, geez that one was important can't figure out how I forgot that one. As for my other stats they are at 20 so far but i will be jacking my intellect up so that I can go into my mage class...

Answering your questions

You posted about moonstones: ...Although when I headed towards the island that was on the map, all I ever saw was water..do you know how long it takes to get there and in what general direction I need to travel in the water (you would think with Athletics at 4 I would swim faster).
Athletics won't help you swim faster. Keep looking for the island with the moonbeasts. It helps if you've patched to V1.3 for the mini-map. Keeps you from going in circles.
You posted about hex editors: ...first off, Hex Editor? Like the ones they use for Diablo and the such? I didn't even realize they had any of those for this game.
Hex editors are simple programs that help you decipher the programming that's written in hexidecimal. There are many generic hex editors. There are a couple of hex editors that have been tailored to DL. Search this forum for them.
You posted about levels: ...what is the level cap
The highest I've seen posted was by a member named kel: 101. No known limit.
You posted about stats: ...As for my other stats they are at 20 so far but i will be jacking my intellect up so that I can go into my mage class
Don't let your Dexterity and Agility lag too far. They directly affect your ability to hit and defend. Strength is good for damage, but if you aren't hitting then ZERO damage is being dealt. Points on Intellect will reduce the cost of all other stats.
About your mage class: there's no reason to wait. You can run class quests for 2 guilds at the same time.

Yea I just haven't got around to it yet :)

I am an avid CoH player, so I am so used to having a travel power to use to get where I want to go...not so much in DL, running takes sooo long (<<---Me of little patience)

Well now that i have actually patched to 1.3 I am loving the minimap function so yay on that note....

And speaking of notes I leave on this one, off to save the realm(s)
