What part of 'protection spells' did you not understand? Come on, you're a high level fighter/mage/thief with a bunch of traps and more protection spells you'll ever need. Don't waste your offensive magics on the demon, because he has a magic resistance of about 90. Go brute force on the being, and make sure he can't hit you (you know how to protect yourself right? You haven't made it all this way by backstabbing and running, now did you?). What weapons are you using? Celestial Fury might help. I recall stunning the demon a couple of times when I fought it.
I also prefer brute force as I like to conserve my spells until really needed (or until I know I will rest soon).
Also, What + does your weapon have to be to hit the balor? I remember facing him and Yasraena was the only one able to do damage while my PC could do nothing but sit there and look pretty. (2 person party at that time)

God it never would have accured to me to go solo on SoA! Thats suicide! ...I cant wait to try it!
Whats UAI? (new to the lingo here)
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Unverse is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is a second theory which states that this has already happened
Update - I'm the furthest I've ever been in the game (after two years of restarts), currently kicking arse in Suldanesselar! Kind of funny how I'm doing much better with one character than with six...looking forward to some fun! Might take this solo through ToB.
First time I got to spellhold was with a solo bard .
But seriously, what + does your weapon need to be to hit the balor in the underdark?
Actually I'm fighting Irenicus. God I hate maze...
Use spell immunity conjuration to take care of maze, used that when I solod a F/M and dint have remove trap for the horn in bridge district.

Sorry to double post but: wow! Defeated him. I summoned a nishruu to distract him, then mislead and similacrum, he mazed a few leading only my Mislead image left. Then in a move of folly (after exhausting my spells on him for nothing) I cast Melf's Minute Meteors....and each one hit! It took 8 of them and he was dead. Man that was crazy.

Yeah, that's the kind of spell to watch out for. Most of the games i play are solo's (went 8 times through or something like that) My favorite is a f/t/m. you should really get the robe of vecna as soon as possible. It will really help you out. And mislead is simply to cheesy. There's nothing stopping a mislead t/m.
Do note that i always remove the xp cap. I didnt read anything about it in your posts. It's simply impossible with the xp cap. I usually am far over my xp cap when going to spellhold. So i don't think its really possible without removind it.
It is possible to do it with a cap on experience, it'd just take a few days longer.
Whenever I solo the game the only spells I really use are:
Melf's Minute Meteors
Vampiric Touch
Raise Undead
Project Image
Morkainen's Sword
These are all easily attainable at a moderate level and can easily be used to finish almost any fight. Hell one of the best reads I've ever had was the journal of Elmonster. http://www.baldurdash.org/journal.html
This site has an interesting story about soloing SOA and TOB with a normal mage, initially soloing SOA with the experience cap. Not only does Elmonster solo the game with a capped mage but also without using the more powerful spells in the game almost purposely.
