I noticed that this board is a little slow, and I was wondering just how many people out there actually own one of these games, or are interested in them.

Post your opinions if you do vote, though...

At the moment, I'm playing M&M8. I don't think it's as well balanced as M&M7, but 3do founder Tripp Hawkins forced the game out in one year--then took the franchise around the developers to "punish" them for not producing better results, and gave it to a new team who turned out a dreadful M&M9. Still, what's to be expected from the autocrat who made Electronic Arts in his image?

The last time I played something of these series it was mm8...
I have got mm8,7 and 6.I think that 8 is better than the rest, but i haven`t quite figured out why.I completed the 8-th really many times and the rest only 1 time... or so.I have heard about mm9 and even seen it in the shop, but i don`t know if it is worth to spend my money. Is it?
Mm9 uses the CS enqine huh?

I have no idea what engine MM9 uses, but it's a poor game that ignores the MM universe, and was released long before it was finished. As a result, the development team had to simply put in quick tie-ups to important quests--you're told to get ABC, turn around, walk for fifteen seconds, enter a cave, and there's a being standing next to ABC. You take it. The being does nothing. That literally happens in the game, repeatedly.
MM2 was a great deal of fun, and quite tough. MM3 was graphically far superior and became a big hit, deservedly so. MM4 and 5 could be played separately, or as one game. They used the same effective 2D engine as MM3, and can still be enjoyed using DOSbox.

Just finished M&M8. It was very enjoyable, except for the braindead puzzles. (The difficulty of NWC's in-game puzzles had been decreasing steadily since the early titles. M&M8's are roughly on par for a five-year-old--and no, I'm not exaggerating--and that means, about the same as KotoR, IMO.) The graphics by now are extremely dated, but didn't bother me a bit. I'm seriously considering going back to M&M6, assuming I can get it to run on my XP.

Might and Magic 8 was one of the first RPGs I ever played and, looking back on it, it has obvious flaws but still a good story and a ton of depth (the world is rather large). My personal favorite was 7 and has been bettered by very few games I've ever played. Much more complete than 8, the story was more robust and, overall, more enjoyable IMO. I also played 6, which I thought was ok, but 7 takes the cake.

You might want to check out some abandonware sites for MM3, 4 and 5, then. 2D graphics, but a lot of fun.
I'm just about ready to give out on MM6, which I haven't played in a long time. The endless inside quest zones with repetitive monsters, who overwhelm you with numbers, is just simply annoying. So it's go outside, rest, get out, kill a few more, go outside, rest up, kill a few more...
MM7 simplified all this, though they definitely overdid the Monty Haul aspect of things in one area. Still, it was, as you suggest, a very fun game. If I didn't remember it so well, I'd probably play it, again.

I was planning on going out and picking up another Might and Magic game soon... I have yet to choose which one though. Which one in your opinion is currently the best? I have played a few, mostly while borrowing them from friends and the like. Want to replay a couple of the titles... some I liked.
Which one has the highest replay value, basically?

I'd recommend MM7, if you enjoy 3D games. It's definitely better tweaked than MM6, while MM8 shows signs of haste--though it's not bad. MM9 is a walking disaster.
If you don't mind 2D, FPS games, check out MM3. It's still an engrossing experience, so definitely a retro one.

I have actually played MM 3... liked it a lot. I think I will go and check out 7. Sounds like it was far ahead of others in its genre.

I have played M&M 6, 7 8 9. I still possess 8 and 9. I gave the others to my grandsons.
I did try to play 5, but it was very odd, and my computer didn't like it very much anyway.
I loved the games. They were one of the first series I played (my very first game was Daggerfall), and I played them ad nauseam.
But didn't the 3DO company go bust?

Yes, Tripp Hawkins showed that despite his boasts for years, it was his ability to raise money, not his executive skills, that he brought to the EA mix. New World Computing had a devil's deal with Hawkins' 3DO: development money in exchange for ownership and a promise to keep a "hands off" approach. Of course, the latter didn't happen, anymore than it did when EA took over Origin Systems, Westwood Studios or Berkeley Systems. He released MM8 before it was finished, didn't like the critical or public response, and hired a team of unknowns to do MM9--which was extremely far behind schedule, and released anyway, to universal pans. Forced NWC's team to work on cheap quickie ripoffs of the Heroes of M&M series (another Hawkins idea), which didn't sell. He basically kept feeding 3DO off NWC, which the latter was never capable of doing from the start, and worked the franchise into the ground. When it was no longer making money, he went into bankruptcy.

Hm. Thanks for the info. I didn't know all that. Pity he buggered (am I allowed that word?) about with it. I always liked the games.
Yes, M&M9 wasn't as good as 8 or 7 in many ways. More limited, rigid. But I rather liked the Dragon character personality. He was too powerful, though.
Must read up about the new game...

I'm not holding out any hopes on the new title. It only seems to be using the series name to get users who still remember the brand. It appears to have little if anything to do with NWC's work, and even seems the opposite of it in some important respects.
And yes, bugger is allowed, but I wouldn't push it.

I'll be good.
No, I just read some of the thread about Dark Messiah, and looked at the movie clips. I don't think it's my sort of game... But I'll keep an open mind for now.

I have played MM 6-9. I loved 6-8. Didn't finish 9 though.
I thought 7 was the best. Thoroughly engrossing, well balanced, nice story and lots of replay value. The only thing I didn't like too much was the ending...but the journey was well worth it.
I know a lot of people didn't care much for MM 8, but I rather liked it. The story didn't grab me like 7's did, but I liked the option of soloing. Really enjoyed going to fight the Regna pirates.
I have an old Win 95/98 hard drive in good shape with all my old saves. I will soon be setting it up in a new 'puter just for the purpose of playing old MM's and few other classics.

Might and Magic and I go pretty far back
At some later point, I played Star Flight (The original strategy in the stars game) using Monochrome Graphics with my PC-XT. I had Wizardry I for the IBM system, and received a free upgrade for that one to the modified version intended to run from the hard drive (though I'd managed to play from the Hdd through some sort of work-around).
I never finished any of the "Xeen" games in the MM4/5 pair/ trio, but loved MM6 so much that I played it a dozen times. Something turned me off in the next two, or I just had too little game-playing time available to me. MM9 was plain awful, of course.

I liked MM 3 very well, and I think I'd overlooked 1 & 2 before that one. My CRPG origins go back to Bard's Tale I on a C64, which I bought after I already had my first (floppy-only) IBM PC, and was not that thrilled with either CGA or IBM's text- only Monochrome Display Adapter.Hill-Shatar wrote:I have actually played MM 3... liked it a lot. MM III was probably the best, IMO. It moved into pseudo-3D, and kept the great cartoonish graphics that were a hallmark of the series until MM VI. It was fun, very well-balanced, seemingly non-linear, and offered a truly fantastic ending. IV and V were simply more of the same (though well done), while I think things started going sour when NWC dropped the graphics for something more "realistic" in VI. They also never did figure out how to apply NPC movement AI to their new 3D engine; at least, not until MM IX, which, being made by another team altogether, forgot all the lessons NWC had learned in its past.
