How do I kill the demon in the temple below the sewers?

Please somebody help me...I'm in a cavern under the temple district sewers, there's a small temple way to the north of the map with several "Diseased Ones" standing around.
I go inside and I find a demon, and inmediately attack with everything I have. After like 5 minutes with all party members whacking it, it still doesn't die thou it's 'near death' status.

Obviously I must put something on the altar behind this guy. I tried putting the rare diopside gem, but it doesn't do anything. I ask the diseased ones outside but no one gives me a clue as to what to put on it.

Thanx for any hints.

You have to heal it, not attack it.

Really? Ok I'll try healing it. Thanx Weasel.

I thought I had to put something on the altar, since i move the cursor and it says that there's "something holy about it."
