free hendak and slaves quest

i freed hendak, killed all the copper coronet baddies, etc. he then told me about the slaver stockade (the old pirate boat). i went there through the sewers, killed all of the slavers and the troll, and rescued three kids. i then left the area and returned to hendak for my exp reward. however, he doesn't acknowledge that i did the quest. i was even carrying the key from the slaver captain, but still nothing. where did i go wrong?
