Problem/Bug with getting the car

Post by electroshock »

After investing many, many hours of play I've just managed to get the car from Smitty in the Den. I gave him the gizmo he needed and the $2000, so he tells me the car is mine.

The problem is that, when I walk over to the car to drive it off, nothing happens. I click on the car and my character just walks over, does the "use" animation where he taps stuff with his hands, and nothing happens except I get a message saying "You see: Car".

Am I using the car wrong? Is this a bug? Is there a patch that can fix this?

I really want to like this game, but every time over the last couple of years that I've tried to play it, just as I start really getting into it my game is cut short by some game-destroying bug.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think this is old bug, which can be repaired by patch.
I'm not sure which patch repairs it, but I think it's the unofficial 1.05 patch.
Whatever the patch is, you can get it from http://www.nma-fallout.com and I suggest that you start installing from oldest patch and install every one of them, including 1.05

I installed the patches, but now I can't load my savegames because they're "from an earlier version". This game is far more trouble than its worth. I understand why people enjoy the gameplay/setting etc, but I simply cannot understand how such a bug-ridden piece of software has become to be regarded as a classic.

I've put up with items dissapearing from my inventory for no reason. I've put up with broken minor quests. I've put up with broken dialogue trees. I won't, however, put up with the fact that I spent two in-game months (about 8 real hours) doing quests to get that damn car, only to be rewarded with the message "You see: Car".

Thanks for attempting to help me anyway.

I'm out of here - this game is awful.

I understand your opinion, but I hope you would still give it second change. Fallout 2 is classic because of the depth of story and quests, and quite huge freedom of doing. Yes, it's buggy, almost too buggy, but after installing those patches is the game is very much above the tolerate-level. So, I would suggest that you give it another change, so that you can see why it has become classic. But the decision is yours to make, and I'm not going (and I can almost quarantee that no-one else here will either) force you to play Fa2.

If you readed to end of this post, I'm pleased, and if you even reconsidered of the another change, I'm even more pleased. It is, after all, very good game, dispesi of all those bugs and strange things.

I am a total geek, i use most of my days playing computer, and i have never ever encountered a game where some bug ruined it for me a long way in. The only thing to do is get back on the horse as fast as you fell off. If you just walk away, you are not even giving it a chance. But maybe Fallout just isnt your style? Maybe you will swap the Fa2 cd with Quake, or some dimwitted FpS game? Maybe the game would start working properly, if you downloaded the newest patch. That usually works for me. If you take your time with this game, you can get so many hours of excitement, horror, fun and action out of it.

If you feel like doing it again, but dont want to spend 8 hours of your life trying to get the care (And i frankly cant see how anyone can use that amount of time on just getting 2000 chips) you can just waste every vendor in The Den. They have a lot of cash, and about 3000 chips in cool gear. Then you have enough money.
Equalization is good.
Payback isnt.

Well no offence but why the hell would you play a game unpatched?

you know game producers release the first game as soon as possible with the game running buggy right?

the patches is just the after work...so i can't possibly understand why you've played with unpatched fa2
just know thw basic rules of gaming
1.install
2.patch
3.(maybe modding)
4.experiment what's your playing style
5.finish the game as soon as possible
6. play multipayer if possible
7. end you know the basic rules :D

I agree with the patching thing, but noth with the list, in case of Fallout 2 anyway.
FA2 is so big and interesting world, that it just isn't possible to finish as soon as possible, and if you really do it, you will eventually return the game soone or later, probably sooner.
And I wouldn't mod the game before I have finished it at least once, since by modding you can alter something that is very essential/interesting when you are playing it first time.

I agree. The game isnt fun if only necesarry quests are done. The longer you play it the more you will like it.Thats at least my case. Anyway, I finished game 2-3 times without any patches. And then only a year ago i started searching for patch( bought game in 1998).

Similar problem

Hey

I'm experiencing a similar problem to that of the original thread-starter.
Got the unofficial 1.05 patch, doesn't seem to solve the problem, anyway, I don't see how it changes a lot, as the readme only states fixing 2 - 3 non-crucial bugs. :(

Any other tips? I've tried reinstalling, but I suspect it has something to do with the savegame in which it happened.
I also have a suspicion it could be related to me having some confusing problems with the official patch when I began gaming. This has been dealt with now, but I'm not sure if it was solved before or after I encountered the vehicle bug.

It's not gamebreaking, as I can simply walk any distance. I don't think there's a proper timeframe of game completion, is there?
Any way, it's just a tad annoying so if anyone has a theory to fixing this rubbish, I'm all ears.

:::EDIT:::

Oh, and, by the way. I've played this game thousands of times since it was released, so I'm not missing anything important if anyone worries. ;P

First, just for making sure, did you check the thread Technical Problems with Fallout 2? Check here!!?
This problem is mentioned there, as some solutions.
But ofcourse, which wasn't mentioned there, it may be that if there is bug, you save the game, reinstall the game and load the old save, the bug still occurs. I've heard and even experienced few times the situation that reinstalling actually corrects the bug, but when I use old save from which had the bug before reinstalling, the bug doesn't disappear. So, if nothing helps and the bug still occurs in that save, there is hardly any other options that to start new game. Sorry :(

And I think this goes with several other bugs as well.

Oh yes, the 1.05 fix does fix many other bugs, not all may be listed, depends on where you get it.
And Fallout 2 has timelimit, 13 years (or was it 12? ). But that's not a problem, because I hvae heard only two cases when someone has reached that limit. I think my record is 5 yeasr, which is far more than enough to explore.
