Protection from Petrification

Post by Kovi »

Has anyone ever used this spell? The only case it would needed is probably the Tanari and similar creatures. But it doesn't protect from those gaze attacks. Is there a mage spell which is useful there?
Another question: is there a mage spells which protects from mindflyers psionics (except the Mordenkainen trick)?

Once, there was a chest trapped by it. No much need of it.
I hope, though not sure, the protection from magical weapon should protect against gaze attacks. But again, greater beholders can cast even death spell and others, you cannot count only on gaze (so the Shield of Baldurian do not mean the full safety). Mind flyers use intellect drain, my party have suffered of it, but prot. from mag.weapons is short enough, so i'm in doubt if the spell wears off or it is failed against such attack.
Just my 2g,

Not sure about mage spells but the ring of free action gives immuntity to flayer psi blasts (but not domination or int drain).

The spell chaotic commands gives some protection against mindflayers psi blasts.

Either Protection from magic weapons or protection from magical energy (level 6 wizard spells) give complete protection from the int drain by the mind flayers. Add Chaotic commands and a ring of free action and only thing you got to worry about is the Umberhulks physical damage.

Thanks for the tips. I'm currently playing with a solo sorcerer without using items, that is why I asked for mage spells.
Protection from Magic Weapons is good against melee attacks (eg. drains), but doesn't protect from blast/gaze attacks.

Aren't the gaze attacks considered as innate ability, i.e. magical weapon?

If you are playing a solo sorcerer...summon one or two morkadianian swords..haste them send them in and they will kill all the mindflayers and umberhulks easily.

I didnt say prot from magic weapons protected from gaze attacks. I said it protected from int drain. Image. I dont post something unless i'v thouroughly researched it.The gaze attacks a mindflayer have are psi, domn, and charm, the ring of free action protects against the psi since that is a stun (affects mobility), chaotic commands protect from charm and domination, and either prot from magic weapons or prot magic energy willl stop the int drain. @KensaiRyu: there is absolutely no problem! Your answer was correct, just doesn't helped me with the first part of the question. Image

@Genesis: yes, that is the normal way to go. I'm just keep looking for new solutions. Image

Anyway the confusion of the Umber Hulks can be avoided with Globe of Inv. (or Spell Turning) and they can be more easily killed with Death Spell (maybe a Cloudkill is enough, but I have no slot on level 5).

I know that those attacks are innate abilites. I still wonder why some of those go "through" Spell Turning and any Spell Immunity.
