Friendly Ogres, 511 magic missile bolts, and more--AUGH!

Post by maalri »

Well, once I hit level 5 everything went kapu. First the game slows down because it is using 100% of my CPU (see previous thread) and now... Every other random encounter while travelling, involves NO combat-- I walked up to the 4 Ogres that I "engaged" (they were all standing atop each other.looked funny) and talked them- got a lot of "ug"s. Then I engaged lizard men in one battle and goblins in another to have my wizard and sorcerer be able to cast 511 magic missile bolts and 311 scorching fire (2nd level spell-think thats the name) bolts. And I can't Loot, at al. I believe their are some bugs in Co8 patches. or is it just my copy of ToEE? Help me out here.. someone play this thing again with the patches, and advise me what happens after 5th level. I went ahead and uninstalled the game, then reinstalled it-strangely my saved games were still there... or some of them anyway, and that's when things got worse!--well except for the 100% CPU usage-that's what has prompted me to uninstall in the first place.

EDIT: Read my 3rd post below first. I suspect that might be where your problem lies. If not, go on and read the rest of this ramble...

Gosh, okay, well yeah you've got issues. Sounds like something's up with your patches.
Were you able to loot up until level 5? That's really strange. Sounds like something is unstable with co8 4.0. You might want to uninstall and reinstall with 3.4 and then manually add the patches that were added to make 4.0.

Here's a few bits of info that may help sort out your problems.

1. The looting bug. This is a conflict between ToEE's original programming and directx 9.0c, which was included in windows XP service pack 2. Troika had no way of knowing 9.0c would make the changes it did to corrupt their game. A fan (Moebius 2778) came up with a fix for this and bundled it with a few other minor fixes and a removal of the level cap and called it "temple.zip". Liv's mod (included in co8 4.0) includes temple.zip, so it should be in there. Atari's patch 3 basically did the same thing temple.zip did, only without fixing the other things; and it was incompatible with all the fan fixes coded for patch 2, so nobody uses it. Everyone uses temple.zip instead. It's that good.... when it's installed and running properly.

2. The magic missile thing pops up if temple.zip is not installed correctly, though of course other causes could bring about the same problem, I suppose. Basically, the way the looting bug was fixed necessitated changing the coding of a few spells. If the new codes aren't in the right place, the game references the old ones instead, and this creates the problem. The solution for someone running just, say, patch 2 and temple.zip, is to make sure the new code for magic missile is present in the right place. I believe it's in ...\data\rules\spells, though things may be in different spots for Liv's mod or for co8 4.0. You could try downloading temple.zip and getting the code and manually putting it in there to see if that fixes your problem, but it sounds like you've got all sorts of issues.

3. When I played ToEE the first time around (pre-patch) there were a lot of issues with enemies not becoming hostile. This went away completely for me by the time patch 2 was installed.

...

Suspicions/things to check: If you for some reason got a bad copy of patch 2, or if it didn't install properly, or if you also had patch 3 or something, this could cause serious problems with the addition of other patches/mods. I suspect patch 2, because of the above-mentioned thing about hostile enemies. However, Liv did a lot of work on enemy AI, so there could be a problem there as well. The reason I might doubt that is Liv's mod received a LOT of playtesting before becoming part of 4.0, and I haven't seen this issue come up once for anyone who's using it.

If none of this is helping, I recommend a trip over to co8.org. The modders over there know the nuts and bolts better than I do. Check the common problems and solutions sticky and any threads on Liv's mod before posting, though, because the solution may be written already.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. :(

Well, I couldn't resist. I poked around a bit at co8, and found a mention that you may have a copy of the file ToEE.exe that contains the game's original temple.dll file, which temple.zip replaces. Check to see if ToEE.exe is larger than 2MB (mine's actually only 33K). If it is, you'll need to replace it. If not, we'll have to keep looking.

Another thing that might be what's up (sorry for all the posts, but I've eschewed co8 and Liv, so I don't know much about them in particular): apparently, 4.0 includes ToEE Front End, or ToEEFE. This is a program that lets you pick which versions of the different mod combinations you want to play. If you haven't yet, you need to run this program and select the various mods before running ToEE.

Posted by Allyx at co8:
"You ARE using the Co8 4.0.0 patch aren't you? Because it sounds like your game is still playing the patch 2 version. If you installed the toffee version you need to open temple of elemental evil frontend (ToEEFE) and select Co8 4.0.0. in the installed modules list (save the settings to make it the default option) and launch the game."

Hey LP and all trying to rack your brains to help me -Here's an update on that-- this only seems to be a glitch in the full screen mode-- on windows mode all my saved games were gone- I had to start anew- as Co8 said would happen, and my computer ran as fast as it should- so no "slogging through mud" as I mentioned in a previous thread--BUT in windows mode I can't seem to pan the screen around to move or battle, has anyone run into THAT particular problem?

Again thanks for all the input Lord Plothos, and the guy/girl from Co8- no I haven't been over there yet, even though I know I should.

Are you able to pan with the arrow keys?

LP, I haven't tried that yet, but I will!! I had some very slow left-right panning with the curser, but as we all know the Neutral Good Opening Vignette has to pan UP and right!! It was very frustrating, since everything else seemed fixed, now I have hope again, just wish I could have the full-screen option...

To all who have Helped- mostly of course LP and the person from Co8-- THANKS! In windows mode everything works fine, but still having all the same old problems in full screen mode, but since Lord Plothos gave me a heads up on how to pan -it works great, thanks again- I am in heaven again. A couple of things though- I have the Humble PCs activated, and I have control over Fruella (gods yes I took her- she married my ugly Half-Orc Barbarian :} ) I cannot see any of her Stats. Does anyone have that problem? I levelled her to 2 and got to choose skills but I still didn't know enough about her to choose properly...hmm. Oh well I started anew and am back up to 3rd level (2 with Fru) and no probs, I will let you know in a day or two what happens when I hit level 5. But this is running sweeter than it ever did before, so I am hopeful. OH and my ToEexe was only 19k LP, but I think the prob for me was not using the ToEEFE properly, and having to go into windows mode to get it right. Thanks all.

Glad it's all working well.
About Fruella: the stats for NPCs are hidden (stupid, but there you go). You can use the console to find out what they are, or just set them to where you think they should be. A bit of investigating with her to-hit and AC bonuses can tell you her str and dex, which are the biggies for her. Also, with the humble NPC patch, you get to level her up, so at fourth level when you pick which stat to boost, you'll get a chance to see all her stats. Write 'em down if you want.

Thanks again LP and I guess I will find all her Stats tonight because she's 3rd level now I think, and I am running Humble PC's. :)

Another Update-- I have Fruella's stats, and am now at Level 5 again for all memebers including the ball and chain. As long as I don't try to disable intro movies, and don't run in full screen mode when I use ToEEFE then everything works absolutely great as far as game mechanics, bugs in game play, that's another thing as my new post points out... Thanks again all.
