Complete Noob need help*Spoiler*

I am completely new to this game that is several yrs old. And, I need help. I have tried unsuccessfuly to beat the spider in the Beggars Nest area. I have the magical club (+1), and an axe. I cannot beat the spider at all. I do not even get close. Please help! I am a barbarian type character, and Axes are my forte, and I have a cleave skill.

What level are you? Do you have a henchman to help you out?

If someone/something seems too tough, look around for something else to do to gain levels and then try again.

General advice for combat for the fights which seems to hard would be something along the line of:

Get help from a henchmen.
Use summons/familiars where applied.
Use potions and spells to buff up. Barkskin for instance can help a lot.
Get better equipment if what you haven't isn't good enough (or possible use something else for a specific monster even if it isn't your prefered)
Get a few more levels before trying again.
Try, try and try again, using different strategies.

(and if everything fails, then cheat your way onwards - hey cheating is allright in singleplayer games to advance from difficult situations, where nobody but the player self is hurt by it)

Wear an item with the "Freedom" property, then you won't get tangled in the spider's net. Get a henchman who uses missile weapons or spells (Try Linu, Glinckle or Sharwyn)
