Ravager, my computer just died. I'm on a laptop at the moment. I'm quite proud of the fact I managed to connect it basically this is not good

No, it's not good, but not neccesarily a serious problem.

It just went black all of a sudden. Then it wouldn't do anything at all. I switched it off and on again but it made no difference (the light on the oblong box was as usual but nothing worked)

Fiona, did you check behind the monitor and the large box to see if the screen was still attatched correctly? By that I mean all wires in the screen and not loose, and the screwed in part for the large box still working?

What about any lights on the monitor? (e.g. any power lights directly underneath the screen itself)

I know that my old screen went blank with sounds still coming from the actual computer. Twice I shoved the wires in harder. One time the screens settings had been reset to dark, and a couple of times I just moved the screen around for a few seconds and it turned on.

How old is your screen? Does your computer still make sounds and have lights?

@Ravager. The light under the screen went orange (I think it's usually green)

@ Hill. The oblong box stll had lights as normal and it seemed to be making noises. The whole thing is about 1 year to 18 months old, I think

Hmm, it's still getting power then and must be on some kind of standby mode. Which is good news at least. Just thinking of a solution...

Fiona, m'dear, your monitor is dying. It is going through the same series of weird things that mine did. Now I have a flat screen.

Your computer is fine. You monitor may have come with the package. If it is not a flat screen, then most likely, they tossed it in as it was easy to make if it came with you computer.

Most likely you have tried to turn it on or off, and if not, try that again. If that does not work, then unscrew the monitors plug at the back, and reinsert it. It is still connected to the powerbar. Disconnect it first. Turn off the power bar.

While you are doing that, I would take out, blow on, and put back in all of your wires into both the computer and the monitor. This may clean off any residual dust that may have gotten on to it, and you can also be assured that they are shoved in tightly. If they still wiggle, shove them in some more,. unless you think it would break.

Yeah, monitors die after a while.
But all the files and everything on the computer will be safe.

And I'd probably recommend turning off all the power for it on the computer and the plug at the wall and turning it all on again, that might reset it.

@Hill,I doubt it's connected with the power leads- otherwise none of the LED's would be working.
And mine isn't flat screen btw.

That doesn't sound so bad. Hill I take it a power bar is the thing connected to the wall that lets you run more than one thing off a single socket?

Doh this machine is shouting at me about critical errors and it's nagging me to do something. When I do what it tells me it takes me somewhere odd. I don't see how I can have got a virus in this cos I only connected it to the internet for the very first time half an hour ago.

I really don't like computers, you know

My computer has only one LED. The power LED. None of the others have a specific LED designated for them at all.

Fiona, we are not with you in England (well, Ravvy is, but I doubt he will drive four or five hours, considering he does not have a car) so I would recommend checking with a specialist or a friend who lives close to you with knowledge in computers to tell you more. However, if you would rather not pay a specialist to tell you how your computer is screwed and would rather replace it, that is fine by us as well.

This is in responce to the second post. Fiona, the power bar is the large bar full of sockets. What else could in mean?

We don't want you getting shocked.

My computer also tells me I have script errors and that I must debug. My other one does not. Ignore it, eventually they decrease in amounts of time they pop up. It is a good way toget you to repair your other computer though.

Do not try to repair it. It leads to headache when it takes you to the programming area, whetever it is.

Trust me, computers are not all that endearing to me either.
