I haven't try multiplayer yet, so I don't know if this helps. Have you try to stay close?

Do you guys have any other in-game problems? Other than not being able to sleep, can you go into buildings just fine as well?

It could be that *SOMEWHERE* in the dungeon a duration spell is running its time. Whenever such a spell is around, you can't rest until it is over.
I played the opening twice, but I don't remember anything about this ... I don't even remember if I ever had to sleep in there.

The way to really test that is when you get Yoshimo; that's where you can for sure rest. If you still can't there, then something is seriously wrong.

I just remember a dialogue bug, its problem is that the system will think you're still in dialogue mode, hence you're not allow to rest. To fix it, either start another dialogue or exit the current map. Maybe you can try to goto that airship area or talk to other NPCs.
