i've done this game countless times and i know the password to activate the schreknet, but i always got it by hacking. this time my hacking skill is only 5 and out of curiosity i decided to have a look around and see if you could actually get the password without hacking. you can get the vault one easy enough but i could not find any reference anywhere in the place to the password for the net security folder. just wondering if anyone has ever managed to do this quest without cheating or hacking the last computer and if so, where is the password?

(NB i don't want to know the password as i already know it, this is just pure curiosity)

The lack of the shrecknet passwords has always surprised me to no end. Mitnick manages to install those programs/commands but forgets to mail you the passwords. Strange.

yeah, i had a feeling you could only do it by hacking but like you i was surprised by the lack of passwords. he emails the first couple of passwords to you then its like he forgets to send them after that. oh well, guess my vampire will have to miss out on the last couple of xp (she managed to use auspex to hack the one in hollywood) as it would be out of character to improve hacking any further and even though i know the password i don't want to use it if there is no way of finding it out in the place itself.

There are two computer manuals. Did you get the one at the ground zero internet cafe?

Well, he said it would be OOC to have a hich hacking skill. And the manual is research 9 req, probably not worth the effort from a powergaming point fo view, the fifth dot in computers is cheaper then upping research from 5 or 6 to 9.

Good point, I never actually bothered to check the research value of that book. I printed off a list of passwords.

being able to increase my hacking feat is not an issue as i have over 30xp spare at the moment. i just don't want to because i am roleplaying and my character wouldn't have a high hacking ability. i was just curious as to whether it was possible to find the password somewhere in the building, as is the case in some of the other quests in the game.

You mentioned using Auspex, which clan is your character?

malkavian, but that makes no difference to the question i was asking. i don't want to know how to get it so my malk can hack the computer, as i've played this game so many times i can do it with my eyes shut pretty much. i just wanted to know if anyone had found a way to get the password without hacking the computer.

I was going to say that, for RP purposes, you could use what you know and claim the voices clued you in.

an auspex moment i.e. an Over-sight?

bit of a problem that lack of passwords - I can remember most of them apart from the Museum where I am usually too busy being shot at to think straight. It is an error that Mitnick! forgets to tell you as he seems to have has installed schrecknet as it is already a command option - however - if you are supposed to be downloading schrecknet from somewhere to install it as spyware, that may be the explanation.

BTW - anybody else wondered if there is a bloke from M.I.T. (can't spell the darn state) called Nick involved with the game?

Mitnick is a reference to an infamous hacker called Kevin Mitnick.
