Woo Hoo! Killed St. Cuthbert

Post by corinthian »

This time through the game I definitely have a power party

1 CG human fighter, dual weapon path (longsword specialization, focus, improved crit, etc - plus the last feat as exotic bastard sword)
1 CG Dwarf fighter, same dual weapon path of longsword but w/o the bastard sword proficiency
1 CE half-orc Barbarian (Level 9 Barb, level 1 Fighter to get an extra feat at 10th), dual weapon longsword
1 CG Cleric/Rogue/Fighter (Rogue 1, Cleric 8, Fighter 1) - bow specialist, craft items for Holy
1 CN Wizard/Evocation craft arms/armor/wonderous items

Goal of this party was to get Fragarach and Scather. Grouped with Thrommell, killed him, looted his stuff, then raised him and took him outside. Got the reward later to get Scather. Also took the Prayer Beads, but didn't see how they were supposed to work.

I was very disappointed that Scather's description says it's a bastard sword but it turned out to be a greatsword and I couldn't dual wield (I understand there's a fan patch that fixes this, but I just ended up selling it after giving it to my CG dwarf and he went from 4 attacks and 80pts/round to 2 attacks and 20).

So the Human fighter has Fragarach and a crafted +3 longsword holy/keen/fire/shock

Iuz was a breeze (only my first time through was I unable to kill him - this is my 4th). I had it happen once before where I killed Iuz just as Cuthbert showed up, and Cuthbert remained behind. I couldn't kill him, and I just reloaded and left him alone.

This time around, the round after Iuz died, Cuthbert appeared and yelled IUZ a few times, and then just stood around while I mopped up the last few people from the Hedrack battle.

So, everything is dead and Cuthbert is standing there...what the heck, let's give him a shot.

First time, I knocked off about 800hps and got him "badly injured" before he killed everyone. So I reloaded, slept 8 hours to recover my spells, and went at him again. This time I actually came up with a strategy.

I began by hitting him with a spell with my Wizard - tried to web him so he wouldn't chase her around. he saved, but the chase was on. Cuth's goal seemed to be to kill my wizard at all costs, so she would just run around. Moving just far enough so she could still cast a spell, but too far for Cuthbert to be able to move and attack in the same round. With the rest of my party I did the following:

Cleric/Rogue/Fighter - stood in the center of the room and used all of the offensive spells and scrolls on Cuth - a flamestrike scroll and about 4 searing light spells. Once that happened, went to the bow (crafted longbow +3 holy/keen/frost/flame/shock). Actually managed a couple of critical hits as the fight wore on, so I hit him once in a blue moon.

My fighters I would just throw at Cuth. Two would run up for an attack, and I would position the third slightly behind and to the side so he was between the wizard and Cuth. I would leave this one as tactical -> ready vs. approach. The goal there was to interrupt Cuth's movement and line up a round of attacks.

I had just killed Barkinar, and my human fighter was using the boots of speed for three attacks with Fragarach and two with the longsword anytime I could position for a full round.

Since Cuthbert had no interest in fighting my fighters or rogue/cleric, they took almost no damage at all. The only times he would swing at them was when I they were moving around him to get in to position so that when he went for my wizard the following round, he would pursue towards the one who was ready vs. approach. The human fighter ended up with 70/127 hps.

It took about 10 minutes, but he finally fell. Most of my party got around 5k experience. I watched the roll window a few times and saw he had something like a 77 AC. He ended up dying after 1578 hps, and everyone received around 5k experience (except the elf cleric/rogue/fighter). Took a bunch of screenshots - I put two of them together and attached them below.

Nice strategy. Another is to use spike growth, which halves his movement permanently and just stay out of range and arrow him to death.

When I killed him solo with my monk, I had to use a huge cheat (gave myself 8000 hp :mischief: ), then 5' stepped every round after I full attacked so he'd have to move to engage me. Dropped his attacks from 17 (yeah, he gets 17 attacks with a full round) to 1 because he moved. But I suppose you could do it solo with somebody who had a really really nice bow and the capability to cast spike growth. Stay out of range and your AC and hp really don't even matter. Just make sure you have enough arrows to do the job. Funny thing is, you don't even need to be any good with the bow, since no matter how good you are you're only going to hit on a 20. This would take a lot longer than 10 minutes, though. Scather and Fraggy speed things up quite a bit. No fair.

Anyway, congrats. Nicely done. Don't you wish he had something besides just full plate? Sheesh.

Also, I suspect your strategy, while funny and clever, might not work with liv's mod. She improved the AI dramatically, and I suspect Cuthy would wipe the floor with just about anybody who stayed in range.
