if...only...

Post by Lime_210 »

I have been on this for hours and am increasingly frustrated...
Basically I have a dodgy version of Vampire Bloodlines in that when it installs on the second disc...it says it cannot find the file
PACK000 CAB Cabinet File with the error 1335
....
I have tried this on TWO other friends computers worked perfectly...
My computer is prettty good I can play Black and White 2 perfectly...
I did try and solve the problem by making .iso files on burnt cds and then installing it and the first time it worked, but now it just seems to stuff up with that same error...
Furthermore I try to copy the .iso files to my actual computer and it stops halfway through disc 2 saying "cyclic reduncy check"...
I'm pretty much broke, so I don't want to buy another copy...if anyone helped they would officially rock.
Thanks

I had a similar problem some while back - just told the computer to 'ignore'/'retry' a few times and eventually it loaded.

CAB files are a pain

Copying all files from CD to HD and installing from thare usually works (still need the original to play), but if you get CRC during that then there is a problem between the CD and drive. You could try to get a new disc, or copy them (again) at your friends PC, or transfer them with a filesharing or ftp program.

If the copies give the same error then maybe your drive is starting to fail.

I saw a similar problem in the Fallout forum. Apparently the problem was that the Master.dat file was corrupted, and that the Master.dat file isnt uninstalled when the game is, so when you install the game again, it is still the same corrupt Master.dat file.

Solution: Remove the entire folder, and then reinstall the game. I am not sure if it will help, but its an idea.
Equalization is good.
Payback isnt.

I'm with MalaksBane on this one. If it works everyplace else but on your system, then the problem is your system, not the files. You've got an escalating threat of damage here, so pay close attention.

1) The imminent threat is drive failure, as MalaksBane notes. First things first. If you have anything important on your computer that you can't bear to lose, get a blank CD and BACK IT UP! Or at least make the effort. Instantly, if not last Teusday.
2) Second, confirm your drive. Open My Computer, right click on your hard drive(s) and select Properties, and under the Tools tab, in the error-checking section, click on the Check Now button. Make sure all of the check-boxes in the dialog box are checked, and start the scan. It could take awhile, so do this last thing at night so it has all night to run. Then go to bed.
3) If it goes through the scan and reports any problems EVEN IF IT REPORTS THEM FIXED, go back and do step 2 again. Repeat until you get a clean scan and then scan it one more time.
4) If, at step three, the number of errors reported increases or stays constant with each scan, your drive is is about to die the hideous death of an errant shovelhead. Backup everything you can and take it in for servicing and repair.
5) If you get the first scan clean, or two consecutive clean scans, you should be OK. At this point, under the same dialog box, elect to defragment. That can take awhile, too.
6) If you get to this point, you may simply have a loose connection. If you have the technical wherewithal, remove the side panel of the computer and re-seat the drive cables by pressing firmly and evenly along the length of the bus connectors and the power connectors on all drives. If you don't then take it to a shop or get a tech-savvy friend to do it for you.
7) Try it again. If you're still having problems, then the difficulty is with the CD-ROM controller, cable, or drive. Take it to the shop.
8) If you're not having problems at the end of step 6, then you should be golden and happily playing VTMB.

I hate to sound like a doom-sayer, but your first imperative must be to protect your data. Your game-playing must wait. If your hard disk fails on you, the loss of your accounting records, photo albums, etc will hurt a lot more than the several days you might have to spend re-building your system.

Trust me. I did the IT trip on an office with 250 workstations, and I've seen the bloodshed more often than I would have liked in a single lifetime.
