~Spoilers~ Gnoll Stronghold

Post by CaptRory »

As much as I appreciate a challenge, dozens of kobolds in every fight is a bit too much. Especially since I'm almost out of ammunition. Other then entangle and color spray, does anyone have any cheap tricks to clean these guys out faster? I'm tempted to whomp up a wand of fireballs to burn through faster.

Get a few more levels before going there
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

Use ranged weapons and attack them one at a time. When they are within range switch to melee weapons. Repeat.

Otherwise sleep might also help. But you should gain a few more levels if you can't cast the fireball spell.

I grabbed Minsc a little early, most of my chars haven't leveled yet. It is good exp though. I haven't even cleared out the mine yet heh. Well, I guess I'll just keep plugging away at it. I think I'll need to swap out my Magic Missiles for Color Spray though I'm almost out of scrolls.

Thanks for the advice.

I have taken the Gnolls' Stronghold before the mines so that's not really a big deal. If you want to really want to level up than just explore some of the wilderness areas but quicksave a lot in case you run into a fight that's over your head.

My party is weak all 'round, but I think I can muscle through. I was just wondering if anyone had an easier way to do it.

*Edited to add* Apparently I was at the Chieftain fight and hadn't noticed him because of the two dozen or so other Gnolls. I was so low on supplies, health, and magic that I had to Ctrl+J to the exit after defeating him and rescuing what's-her-name .

Well, I had four flame arrows lol. I ended up doing the Entangle+Color Spray trick again. Combined with Bless and Chant it was enough.

Ive also always done the stronghold before the mines (even on my most recent solo)
The most efficent way to do it is to use the steps ;)
Rather than letting yourself get swamped by all enemies, keep all chars half way up a set of the steps (spellcasters at back with tanks up front), then send one tank forward to trigger a group of Gnolls then retreat your tank back to the steps, repeat as necessary to destroy enough enemies allowing you to free Dynaheir

While your tanks are doing their bit, busting skull's, Your spellcaster's are free to use heal/ attack spells without getting hurt

You will also find that all Gnolls can only go down (and up) the steps in single file, making it an incredibly easy (and cheesy) tactic, but it's almost foolproof  ;)

Wow, that is evil Sarge, I like it. What I was doing was, I got the gnolls clumped together, I had the PC (F/M/C) use a Scroll of Color Spray which knocked out all but a few of them, and everyone went medieval on their arse while they were knocked out.

As the Gnoll's generally stay close together I can see that working a dream :mischief:

In my opinion though this stage should alway's be done before the mine's, it's not difficult and it give's you and your group a decent exp 'rush' before you go into the mine.
They arent hard, they just get in the way

The biggest problem I had was the vast number of gnolls that kept respawning.

that's just more XP, may be cheesy but I would rest alot there and just keep killing them until I go bored. Stacked up on experience though.

I used Sarge's tactics.

Just wondering if you actually knew where Dynaheir is being kept, as after checking through all the other post's, there's no reference to it...
If you don't, check the bottom of the pit's with one of your char's (preferably a tank) while your other char's are busy, I cant remember exactly which pit she's in but I think it's the first one ;)
